Hello there! My name is Kayla Nellums. I have been teaching for 18 years. My first three years were right here in San Antonio, Texas, where I taught 7th graders. My husband’s career path in the Navy took us to Virginia where I taught 8th graders for another three years. This is my 11th year teaching at Cole Middle School. I have a bachelor's degree in Information Science with Business emphasis from Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica, and I completed Post Baccalaureate studies at the University of Houston in Clear Lake, Texas. In spite of all the bells and whistles that those degrees carry, I chose to do what I knew I was meant to do since I was in the sixth grade – teach. I received my teacher certification from Texas Teachers, I have a master's degree in education with an emphasis on being a reading specialist from Regent University in Virginia, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in curriculum and teaching from Northcentral University in La Jolla, California.
Being from Jamaica, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and being in any body of water. My favorite color is pink, I have two wonderful children, a great husband, and a dog. I absolutely LOVE all my students, and I look forward to a great year.
At Cole, aside from teaching my 7th- grade students, I sponsor the Student to Student and Junior Student to Student organization, I coach UIL dictionary and listening skills, and I am the Gifted and Talented Coordinator for the middle and high school.
