We hope you find the following information helpful.
If you still have questions, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
*What time does school start and end?
School starts at 7:45 and students are dismissed at 3:05 pm. Students are counted tardy any time after 7:45 am.
*What time does first grade eat lunch? Can I join my child for lunch?
First grade lunch is from 10:50-11:20. You are more than welcome to come up and eat lunch with your child. We have designated tables set aside for you and your first grader. Other first grade friends will not be allowed to join as this is a special time reserved for you and your little one. You will be able to sign up to eat with your child through a link provided in Sonntag's main website.
*Is there homework in first grade?
Research shows that at their age, the most important factor to help students grow academically is reading at home. First graders are expected to read at home each night to practice the important work we learn in school. Beginning the 2nd 9 weeks, students will have spelling words to study throughout the week to prepare for their test on Friday.
*What is the purpose of the BEE (Bring Everything Everday) binder?
Each day, your child will bring home their BEE Binder. This binder includes your child's daily behavior chart, notes, spelling words, classwork, and their guided reading book. We expect your child to bring their binder back to school each day.
*What is guided reading?
Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves the teacher working with a small group of students who are all on similar reading abilities. During this time, the teacher is working to identify your child's needs in the areas of reading, writing, and phonological awareness. Your child will bring home their guided reading folder each day sin their binder with a book that is at their reading ability. Please take the time to read this book each night with your child. Guided reading will begin when our beginning of the year reading assessments are complete.
*I would like my child to celebrate his or her birthday at school. Can I send in birthday treats?
With the concerns for student health and safety increasing, particularly those associated with severe allergies and food sensitivities, the Frisco School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) has recommended that we as a school district continue to celebrate birthdays, but discontinue the food and drink component of the celebration. Please do not send in edible birthday treats such as cookies, cupcakes, donuts, etc.
Sonntag will continue to celebrate student birthdays through our monthly GMS and a special birthday celebration with their class.
*What is GMS?
GMS stands for Good Morning Sonntag. Once a month, starting at 7:50am in the cafeteria, all students (K-5) will join together for a morning assembly. During this time, students will lead a fun assembly.
*What do I do when my child is absent?
To report your child absent, please email our data clerk, Sandy Jacobs at jacobssa@friscoisd.org or visit the Sonntag website. Please include your child's name (first & last), teacher's name, and the reason for your child's absence.
If your child is out because of a doctor's appointment, please make sure to send in a note to excuse his or her absence.
*What if there is a change in my child's dismissal?
If your child will be going home a different way, whether temporary or permanent, you must send a note/email or call the front office to let your child's teacher know. A 'verbal note' from your child or sibling will not be honored. If your student has a last minute change of dismissal, it is imperative that you call the office prior to 1:00 pm to ensure time for the office to notify the teacher.
*What do I do if my child forgot an item (ie. Lunch, snack, paperwork, etc…)?
Your child’s instruction time is valuable and interruptions within the classroom take away from all students’ learning.
If you need to drop off lunch for your child, please leave it on the designated cart within your child's grade level section. Please drop the lunch off by 10:00 and make sure you label it with your child’s name, teacher, and grade. Thank you for supporting us in maintaining the integrity of the instructional time as well as fostering responsibility in our students.
What can I expect socially/emotionally from my first grade student?
