In second grade, your child will develop important math skills across several key areas. Our curriculum follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards to ensure a strong foundation in math. To support you and your child, our amazing second grade teacher, Mrs. Shedd, has created a helpful YouTube channel—see the link below.
Here are the main topics your child will learn:
Place Value: Understanding ones, tens, and hundreds, as well as comparing and ordering numbers
Addition and Subtraction: Building fluency with facts up to 20, solving multi-digit problems, and working on word problems
Measurement: Using standard units to measure length, weight, and time
Money: Identifying coins and bills, counting money, and making change
Geometry: Recognizing and describing 2D and 3D shapes and understanding symmetry
Data and Graphs: Collecting, organizing, and interpreting data through charts and graphs
Basic Multiplication Concepts: Learning multiplication as repeated addition
If your child needs support in a specific area, their teacher will reach out to inform you and give you more specific ways to help. Below are some fun ways to support what they are learning in class.
Addition and Subtraction
Play board games that involve collecting points.
Use everyday snacks (like crackers or fruit) to create and solve simple math problems.
Make up story problems together based on family outings or chores.
Place Value
Build numbers with LEGO bricks or blocks, grouping by ones, tens, and hundreds.
Use a deck of cards to create three-digit numbers and compare them.
Write numbers on sticky notes and put them in order around the house.
Measurement
Have a “measurement scavenger hunt” to find items longer or heavier than a chosen object.
Bake together and use measuring cups and spoons to explore volume and weight.
Time how long it takes to complete fun tasks, like jumping jacks or drawing a picture.
Use vocabulary like inches, feet, miles in conversation.
Money
Set up a pretend store with price tags and play money for buying and selling.
Sort coins and bills, then play “coin bingo” or “money matching” games.
Count real money together when paying for groceries or saving allowance.
Geometry
Create art projects using different shapes and patterns.
Build 3D shapes with toothpicks and marshmallows or clay.
Go on a scavenger hunt to find different shapes. (Square, pentagon, hexagon, rhombus, parallelogram)
Data and Graphs
Survey family or friends on favorite snacks, colors, or movies, then graph the results.
Track daily weather and create a chart together.
Use stickers or stamps to make bar graphs of collected data.
Basic Multiplication Concepts
Use small toys or snacks to make groups and count totals as repeated addition.
Sing skip counting songs or rhymes during car rides or chores.
Draw arrays with stickers or stamps to show multiplication visually.
