What is fluency? Fluency is the combined abilities to read with accuracy, speed, and proper expression.
Students should first have a solid foundation in letter fluency. Your child should be able to name a letter when it is shown in a variety of fonts. After students are able to identify the letter by name, they must then be able to identify the letter sound. Students must be able to name the letter or letter sound in 2-3 seconds or they do not know it. Challenge your child to name as many upper and lowercase letters in random order as they can in one minute.

Subitizing is the beginning of numeral fluency and a foundation to math.
Subitizing is like a superpower for kindergarteners! It's the ability to instantly recognize the quantity of a small group of items without counting. Think of it as quickly grasping how many dots are on a die without actually counting them one by one. For little ones, this skill is like a math shortcut—it helps them develop a sense of numbers and quantities without going through the whole counting process every time. It's foundational for understanding numbers and lays the groundwork for more complex math concepts later on. Plus, it makes math a bit more like a game, and who doesn't love a good game?
Conceptual subitizing is like the next level of subitizing—it's when kids not only recognize the quantity of a group of items but also understand the underlying mathematical concepts. It's like seeing not just the dots on a die, but also understanding that it represents a specific number. For example, if you show a child two groups of objects—one with three red apples and another with four blue apples—they might not just see two groups of apples but also grasp that there are three in one group and four in the other. It's about connecting the visual representation of quantity with the numerical concept. This deeper understanding sets the stage for more advanced math skills as they progress through their education.
