Homework/Extended Practice

Homework is given daily to reinforce skills learned in class each day. Homework will be checked and reviewed. At times homework will be graded. Your child will be told ahead of time when I will be grading the assignment. Doing homework not only builds a sense of competence in your child, but also fosters good study habits, responsibility and independence.

.

Tips to make homework/extended practice easier for both you and your child:

Create a "Homework Zone" for your child:

Pick a place in your house where your child can complete his or her homework each day. Great places are a desk or even the kitchen table. The ideal "Homework Zone" is quiet and well lit.

Stock your "Homework Zone" with a "Homework Survival Kit":

Make sure your child has everything he or she will need to complete the assignments. Stock the kit with supplies that may be needed at homework time such as pencils, extra paper, erasers, rulers and highlighter.

Help your child with time management:

Try to set a time each day when homework will be completed. Try not to leave homework until right before bedtime.

Be positive about homework:

Tell your child how important school is. Usually the attitude parents express about homework is the one their child will acquire.

Homework Contracts:

If your child needs extra motivation to complete his or her homework, consider creating a homework contract with him or her. This can be used as a reward system or to reinforce the importance of homework.

Always remember, if a homework assignment becomes too frustrating for your child it is okay to put it aside. Return to it at a later time or write me a note in your child's agenda explaining areas of difficulty for your child.

  • Please review your child's agenda daily and sign/initial the bottom each day.
