Costuming: Female Characters
Rationing and Utility:
The British government implemented a scheme called "Utility" to conserve fabric and resources, which limited the styles and materials used in clothing. This led to simplified designs with minimal embellishments.
Materials:
While natural fabrics like cotton, wool, rayon, and linen were used, synthetic materials like rayon and viscose became more common as wool was needed for uniforms. Nylon was also restricted, leading to shortages of stockings.
Styles:
Skirts were often shorter, and bodices were fitted. Pockets, cuffs, and large pleats were reduced, and garments were designed for ease of manufacture.
Practicality:
Women's work in factories and other wartime roles led to a rise in practical clothing like slacks and headscarves.
Accessories:
Scarves, hats, and belts were used to add flair to utilitarian outfits. Luminous accessories like pin-on flowers and handbags were also produced to help people be seen during blackouts.
Examples of popular outfits:
Skirt suits, button-up dresses, and shirtwaist dresses were common, as were pantsuits.
