Before reading, have your child look at the cover of the book and make predictions about what he/she thinks the book will be about. Ask your child if the book is a fiction (fantasy, make believe, narrative) or non-fiction (real, expository, informational). How did they know? What clues did they use to make the decision?
Next, take a picture walk through the book by looking at the pictures, but not reading the words. Continue to make predictions as you look at the pictures.
Then, you may chose to echo read (you read first and then your child repeats you), choral read (you read with your child), or your child may independently read as you listen. Try having your child whisper read when he/she is done. Remember to have your child track the words as he/she reads with his/her finger.
If the book is fiction, after you have finished reading discuss the characters and setting of the book. See if your child can retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Ask questions about the main details in the story. Your child may look at the pictures to assist with remembering. Talk to them about their favorite parts, parts they disliked, what they think might happen next, etc.
If the book is non-fiction, ask your child to explain the topic of the book. Look back through the book and identify the parts of the book such as the table of contents, glossary, diagrams, etc. Discuss the purpose of the book and why the author wrote it. Ask your child to name facts they learned after reading the story.
Remember to enjoy this time with your child and have fun!
