May-June:

The Courage Unit

To end the year, students are going to be completing an exploration on what it means to be courageous. Students reading and investigating about many acts of heroism and everyday courage in both the past and present, so that they can build their own understanding of the important value.

Students will be practicing their summarizing and synthesis writing skills in this unit. They will be producing multiple short writing pieces in response to what they learn.

Book of the Month:

Getting Ready for Summer Reading

Students are still finishing up their choice book for Social Studies where they will be giving a book talk to their peers. As such, they will not be selecting a choice book to read in May in ELA.

All students will, however, be visiting the library to learn more about summer reading requirements and choosing books to borrow for the summer if desired. Students will be required to read at least 3 books over the summer. They can be from the school library, the Farmington town library,  or personal books. The books should be books they have not read before, and should be at their independent reading level/grade level to keep those literacy skills up over the summer break.
