Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries are available for a variety of criteria, including academic excellence, financial need, leadership, community involvement and much more. There are literally thousands of scholarships available. You may want to start with the links in the Scholarship Resources below. Then see the list beneath to check out local community scholarships. Students who take the time to do lots of research will find many opportunities to apply for scholarships.

Johnathan Doody Memorial Scholarship


The Johnathan Doody Memorial Scholarship is preferred for emerging, first-year male University of Alberta students. There are three $800 scholarships available for the students who apply. The scholarship is preferred for students who have a strong commitment to both academics, volunteering, and extracurricular involvement. Johnathan Doody was an exceptional athlete, an inspiring student leader, a loving friend, and a talented scholar. Johnathan came to the University of Alberta to study engineering. In October of 1993, Johnathan was tragically killed in an automotive accident outside of his hometown. The scholarship is in honour of the excellence of Johnathan Doody and seeks to reward scholars who have demonstrated similar qualities in their time as high school students.

We encourage students to apply in August to register early for interviews. Recipients will be selected in early October and all applicants will be contacted regarding the selections.

Local Community Scholarship Awards

For graduating students in the Fort McMurray Public School District.

Lorraine & Doug Demers Scholarship

Overview: To encourage graduating students from Fort McMurray Public School District to further their post-secondary education.

Sponsored by: Fort McMurray Community Member

Award Value: $3000.00

Number: 1 graduate from Fort McMurray Public School District High Schools.

Nomination: Student in their first year of Post-Secondary Study only.

Guidelines:

Student meets minimum requirements to obtain an Alberta High School Diploma.

  1. Students who are financially in need furthering their post-secondary education at an accredited Canadian program.
  2. If there is no applicant as per No. 1 above, application will be open to any student attending a Canadian post-secondary program.
  3. Applications to be received during month of April.
  4. Selection process to be completed in May.
  5. Scholarship to be awarded at end of year ceremonies.
  6. Proof of acceptance and payment of first semester tuition at the accredited post-secondary program is required before scholarship payment is awarded.

Selection Criteria:

(1 pt.) 1. Canadian university programs first.

(3 pts.) 2. Proof of financial need:

  1. A letter detailing the financial need
  2. Copy of your most recent assessment from Revenue Canada
  3. Copy of your parent/guardian’s most recent assessment from Revenue Canada

(4 pts. Total)

If a tie occurs, names will be put in a hat and one name drawn out.

Deadline: April 30th

  • One (1) Staff Member for each high school
  • One (1) Trustee
  • One (1) Community Member (has been appointed by Donor)

Canadian Bechtel Limited Muskeg Club – The S.M. Blair Bursary

Overview: Canadian Bechtel was the company most responsible for the construction of the Syncrude Plant in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. When construction was completed the President of Bechtel, S.M. Blair wished to leave behind a legacy to the community. The company donated a large sum of money, the interest of which provides for this scholarship.

Criteria:

  • Meets minimum requirements for students to obtain an Alberta High School Diploma or an Alberta Certificate of High School Completion within the year of application.
  • Preference given to students entering the Technologies, Trades or related fields.
  • Recipient may not have received more than $2500 in other scholarships
  • Registered in a Post-Secondary Institution.
  • Short Essay outlining the applicant’s career path.

John Hasselfield Endowment Foundation Funding Program

final reminder of the approaching deadline of March 1st, 2020 for the John Hasselfield Endowment Foundation Funding Program. As mentioned in prior years’ correspondence, the Board of the Foundation offers one (1) round of funding each year in the Spring.

We now have an online application available which allows uploading of the student’s essay and reference letter; we have also attached the updated Application for Funding which can be completed and submitted. Fort McKay Alcor Annual Aboriginal Trades Scholarship

Amount: $1000.00

Criteria: Be a graduating student who is Aboriginal (Status or Metis)/Composite High, Frank Spragins or Westwood graduate/Be accepted into an accredited Trades school for Plumbing, Refrigeration, Electrical, Millwright or Carpentry/Proof of Aboriginal Heritage/Proof of acceptance into the school of choice.

Schulch Leader Scholarship

Amount: $80,000 - $100,000

Criteria: Graduate high school in 2017/2018/Canadian citizen/plan to enroll in a selected list of universities in a math, science, or engineering program/must meet two of the following criteria (academic excellence, leadership, financial need)/Not planning a career as a medical practitioner.

Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarships

Amount: 5000.00

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Canadian Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria: Be graduating high school with plans to enter a post-secondary institution in the fall of 2017 or must be CEGEP students planning to pursue a university education. Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a degree at a post-secondary institution (in Quebec a three year vocational program or a two year preparatory program followed by a university degree are acceptable). Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required). Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities. Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 65 Attend high school (or CEGEP) and reside in Canada Be Canadian citizens.
