The simplest definition for literacy is the ability to read and write, but in total there are four strands of literacy:

• speaking
• listening
• reading
• writing

Literacy is about much more than reading books. We use our literacy skills every day of our lives. Here are a few examples:

• reading the mail
• reading ingredients
• following road signs
• reading the newspaper
• writing a cheque
• filling in a job application
• checking your emails
• using an instruction manual
• helping your children with their homework
• updating your Facebook status
• ordering from a menu
• texting a friend
• reading a bedtime story
