Week of June 15, 2020 - Week 14 THE FINAL WEEK OF SCHOOL

We've reached the final week of school and what a journey it has been. Thanks to you and your families for plugging along and meeting us at the end of the year. I wish you all a healthy and happy summer, and for our third graders who are headed to Knollwood...

YOU WILL BE AMAZING!

All the best,

xoxo

Mrs. Sustick

Please take this week to catch up on any assignments you didn't get a chance to complete. I know it's been hard, but you did it, and we made it together. Here are two videos of just some of the great pictures you shared with me during our virtual learning weeks.

Week of June 8, 2020 - Week 13

Hope everyone had a good weekend! This week I created a Screencastify video about how to create a video using WeVideo. It's kind of a reminder video and one you can check back and look at if you forget how to do a certain feautre using WeVideo. I know used WeVideo during the year to record ourselves and create "about me" videos. Many of you have created some videos at home which is great. We just need to make sure all the videos are appropriate for school. You can video things about home and what you're doing, but they need to be appropriate for school. Use this WeVideo tutorial, (a tutorial is something like a video or a presentation that teaches you how to do something), as a reminder about how to add different features to your video. Screencastify stopped recording toward the end of the tutorial, so the tutorial is recorded on two parts, WeVideo Tutorial 1 and WeVideo Tutorial 2. If you'd like to share your video with me, click finish and send me the link you receive in an email from WeVideo saying your video is ready.

Week of June 1, 2020 - Week 12

Happy first week of June! How's everyone doing? To continue with the theme of growing and gardens from last week, this week I have two videos for you to watch about food scraps (and we all have those), and what we can do with them--(besides just throwing them in the garbage!) Take a look at these videos and let me know which one you try. Maybe you will even try to do both! Send me a picture or comment on the Google Classroom post for 2nd and 3rd grade. Pictures can be sent to sustickj@fairhaven.edu. Looking forward to hearing about what you tried and seeing some of your photos.

P.S. Hillary lives in an apartment in NYC, but since we live in houses with a backyard, your food scraps can go in a big compost bin outside and not in a tiny plastic bag.

Week of May 26, 2020 - Week 11

Let's get growing Sickles! Finally, it seems warm enough to place some plants and seeds in the ground. This week, show me what's growing in your garden and try to plant something new!No seeds? No problem! Try using a vegetable or fruit seed that you have in your kitchen. Get some dirt, put it in a plastic throw away cup or old planter, add the seed, and give it some love, sun, and water. Maybe you have an avocado at home and can try to root the pit as shown in the picture below. Remember the one that was growing on the windowsill in the library? Take a look at the first video, Home Grown With Hillary, to see what you can grow. The second video was created from some of the pictures taken in the Sickles garden. Take a picture of what's growing around your home and send it to me at sustickj@fairhaven.edu. I know some of you mentioned that you're already starting a garden at home. Let's see what you started to grow at your house. Happy growing!

Week of May 18, 2020 - Week 10

Hi Sickles!

I hope you had a good weekend. This week we're going to take a look at something on our Sickles Symbaloo. (It may be something you liked to play when you came in the library for Media.) Take a look at ABCYA and choose a game to play. You will need to access ABCYA on the computer because the mobile version on a tablet or phone requires a subscription. The computer version is free and there is no log on required.

First choose your grade level on ABCYA (the planet with your grade), and then choose your game. Kindergarten and first grade can choose two games to play from any of the five different sections (letters, numbers, holiday, strategy or skill). Kindergarten and first grade, please send a picture or a message to my email with the name of the two games you played. Second and third grade can choose a game from each of the five sections (letters, numbers, holiday, strategy or skill) and comment on your Media Google Classroom the names of the five different games you tried. I wonder which games you'll choose?

The Ultimate Rube Goldberg Machine--check out "The Cake Server" by Joseph's Machines

Week of May 4, 2020 - Week 8

Good Morning Sickles!

Hi everyone, I hope you had a good weekend and were able to enjoy some sun and fresh air yesterday.

These last two weeks you have been busy creating a Rube Goldberg machine during week 6, followed by an invention in week 7. This week I want to introduce you to Caine Monroy.

Click on the picture of Caine Monroy to view the video and see the arcade he created when he was in elementary school. "Caine's Arcade Cardboard Challenge" became popular all over schools and in makerspaces after this film was made. The "Cardboard Challenge" grew from one simple video the filmmaker Nirvan Mullick created after meeting Caine when Caine was just nine years old. Caine is now in college and was awarded a full scholarship to Colorado State University. A nonprofit called "Imagination Foundation" was created to fund children with creative ideas.

After you look at the video, try to make a game for your family to play. If you don't have cardboard, you can make it out of paper, or tissue or cereal boxes, or paper towel rolls. See what you have in your recycling bin that you can possibly use. Maybe you can add something I haven't even thought of! Send a picture or a video of you and your game to sustickj@fairhaven.edu

Have fun planning and creating your game!

Week of April 27, 2020 - Week 7

Good morning Sickles!

Take a look at the video "Meet Molly, The Kid Who Never Stops Inventing". Watch how she creates problem solving ideas. What are some of the things you see at home that you think could use a better way? Maybe there's something involving your toys, or a game, or something in your room or outside in your backyard that would be better if...

You did such a good job at your Rube Goldberg machines, (thanks for sending me your pictures and videos :)) -- what can you think of for a problem solving invention? Send me your pictures and or videos at sustickj@fairhaven.edu. I'd love to see them!

Happy Earth Day! Today is Earth Day! April 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of taking care of our home. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in support of our environment. Take a look at these videos and get out in your backyard to dig in the dirt or plant something!

Week of April 20, 2020 - Week 6

Hi everyone!

I hope you had a good spring break. I hope everyone is staying healthy, keeping busy, reading, and taking time to rest too. This week I'd like you to take a look at the video below about a boy who makes a Rube Goldberg machine. Rube Goldberg was an inventor, engineer, sculptor and cartoonist who drew cartoons showing a roundabout way to finish a job. Audri Clemmons describes a Rube Goldberg machine as a complicated chain reaction made to complete a simple task. Take a look at the video to see what Audri attempts to do with his creation. Can you think of something you can make at home using things around your house or in your backyard? You might want to make a drawing of it first to make a plan. It will probably take a few times to get the results you want, or maybe you'll have to change some pieces to make it work. See how many times Audri thought he would have to try before his plan worked. How many times did it actually take? Have an adult take a picture of you and your Rube Goldberg invention and send it to me at sustickj@fairhaven.edu

http://www.viewpure.com/0uDDEEHDf1Y?start=0&end=0

Have fun with planning and creating your Rube Goldberg! I wonder what you'll be making? Have a great week and I'm looking forward to seeing your photos :)

Week of April 6, 2020 - Week 4

Hi all! I hope you are all well as we enter week 4 of virtual learning. Autobiographies are due this Friday. I received many last week from students in all grades. They were so creative and I learned some new things that I didn't know before! You can choose to draw and write on paper of your choice. If you'd like, you can type your autobiography using a Google doc or Google slide. You can also insert images on the doc or slide. Have fun with it, be creative, and tell me your story! Special thanks to Emily and August P for thinking of some new questions to add to your autobiography. You might want to add these to your autobiography:

  • What's your favorite book?
  • What's your favorite song?
  • What's your favorite pet or animal?
  • What are your favorite things about school?
  • If you could be a superhero, who would you be?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up?

If you sent your autobiography to me and want to add these to your story, that would be great! Send all autobiographies to sustickj@fairhaven.edu

Week of March 30, 2020 - Week 3

Scholastic announced today that Dav Pilkey will share drawing lessons and will read aloud his stories beginning April 3rd at 8:00 am. Click this link to access Dav Pilkey at home.

Harry Potter Fans: Introducing Harry Potter At Home and the Audible version of HP Book One. Click on the underlined links.

Hi everyone! Week number 3 of virtual learning has arrived :) Hope all are doing okay in your homes. This week I would love to hear about YOU! I know we meet each week for 45 minutes and I've gotten to know everyone pretty well. I would love to hear more about you, your family, what you like to do, and where you like to go. Maybe this week, since we are all storytellers at heart, you can tell me a story-the story of YOU. You can get any type of paper and use as many pages as you need. Write and draw your story, your autobiography--a story about you, by you! Hopefully, when we are all back in school we can share these. For now, maybe you'd like to send me a picture to show me what you've done. Your book can have a cover like a real story and each page can show a different part of your life. Here are some things you might add:

  • Your name, birth date, where your were born, who is in your family, if you have sisters and brothers, what are their ages and names
  • Your favorite foods, colors, games to play
  • Your favorite places to go, places to visit
  • What season is your favorite? Is it winter, spring, summer or fall?
  • What are your favorite things to do during that season?

Have fun writing and illustrating your autobiography! I can't wait to see what you do! If you have any questions, reach out to me at sustickj@fairhaven.edu Have a good week :)

Week of March 23, 2020 - Week 2

Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing okay. I miss seeing you in the library creating and building with Lego bricks, Minecraft Edu, and Keva Planks. I hope you are building and creating at home! If you'd like to send me a picture of something you created, please send a picture to sustickj@fairhaven.edu. I would love to see what you're building and designing! :-)

Show your family how you found the information for the World Book Travel Slide you were working on during school. Remember we were trying to give Mrs. Schwartz ideas for a vacation? This week's assignment is for you to use the World Book Online website to choose a topic, but this time you can choose any topic that interests you. You can read and listen to the article you choose by clicking on the loudspeaker icon near the beginning of the article. I've attached a Google doc called Virtual Learning World Book Online on Google Classroom in Media. Use the Google doc to tell me what topic you chose and something you learned. You can add a picture to the Google doc too. (Reminder about how to add a picture: click on the insert tab at the top of the page, then click image, then search the web.) Choose a photo and click insert. You might have to make the picture smaller to fit the page and can do that by clicking the corner of picture and dragging the corners in to make the picture smaller. Remember to click on the highlighted tabs above to open one tab for World Book Online and one tab for Google Classroom in Media. When using World Book Online at home, you might need to log in with a username and password. The username is knollwood and the password is fhboe. I can't wait to see what you choose!

Week of March 16, 2020 - Week 1

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the first week of distance learning! Students are able to participate in building and creating with Keva Planks, Legos and Minecraft Edu during Media. They are also very familiar with our Sickles Media Symbaloo which has many of the websites we use during the year. Please take a look at one of the websites called Tumblebook Library. Click here for access to Tumblebook Library. If the website does ask you for a username or password, please use vsickles as the username and reads as the password. Students, please choose two books to read. Make sure one of the books has the quiz feature and you can test your memory about the story. Retell the stories to someone in your house. I wonder which books you'll choose?

Happy reading!

Mrs. Sustick
