Gareth Thomas Materials Excellence Award
This award consists of a bronze bust mounted on a plaque and honors the memory of a great University of California Materials Scientist who achieved global recognition for his pioneering work on advanced characterization of materials by transmission electron microscopy and for the development of novel high strength steels.
1. Award will be given yearly to two most deserving University of California students, one at the Berkeley and one at the San Diego campus. The nominee should be graduated, being a Master of Science, and continuing his/her study with a research project in order to obtain a PhD.
2. The selection will be made by a reviewing committee, comprised of a minimum of nine members who are highly respected in the fields of materials science, engineering, and electron microscopy:
a. The Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Dept. at UCB.
b. The Director of the Materials Science and Engineering program at UCSD.
c. Two MSE faculty members from UCB designated by the Chair.
d. An MSE faculty member from UCSD designated by the Director.
e. Four members from outside UCB and UCSD, well known in the field of materials science, engineering and/or electron microscopy.
f. Mrs. Annelies Thomas-Zeeman. Who is a non-grading member that will cast a decisive vote in the event of a tie.
3. The selection will be made from nominations submitted by the MSE faculty before the deadline of August 9, the birthday of Gareth Thomas. Each nomination should be accompanied by a detailed nomination letter, copies of the papers and patents co-authored by the students, and a complete CV of the nominated post graduate. The selection committee will evaluate the nominations according to the criteria:
a. Research competence. The importance of the publications will be assessed by their number, the impact factor of journal, and student position in the order of authors.
b. Conference presentations.
c. Academic excellence. Number of courses and grades received.
d. Integrity/spirit of cooperation/leadership.
4. The award will be advertised among all MSE faculty and graduate students in the UC and UCSD programs and in a website developed for this purpose. The website will also contain a tribute to Professor Gareth Thomas and testimonials from his former colleagues and students.
5. The award will be given annually at ceremonies at UCSD and UCB by Mrs. Gareth Thomas (if she can attend) and will be preceded by a laudation to Prof. Thomas and a detailed account of the awardees contributions. The entire committee as well as two awardees will be present at the two events.
6. The endowment will cover the manufacture of the awards, transportation of awardees to sister campus, and ceremony. If funds are sufficient, a check will be given to each awardee as a token of his/her excellence.
7. The award ceremony will alternate between the two campuses.
8. Only one nomination is allowed per nominator.
