GCP Program Requirements
(WITH SUGGESTED TIMELINE)
(WITH SUGGESTED TIMELINE)
LANGUAGE COMPONENT: Students must take a language through level 4 and receive a final grade of at least 'C' in each level. Students will complete this Google form to indicate the courses they have taken to meet this requirement. Alternate approaches may be applied toward satisfaction of the GCP academic requirement on a case-by-case basis by submitting a completed Academic Alternative Proposal Form to the GCP Review Committee.*
Courses taken throughout high school OR form submitted at onset of pursuit of alternative program
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL COMPONENT: The travel must provide a significant opportunity to interact and connect with the local culture and people. A typical family vacation or sight-seeing tour to another country would not fulfill this requirement. Proposals for non-international inter-cultural experiences will be considered.
A degree of student involvement in planning and decision making for the trip is encouraged so that students can gain confidence in their ability to be self-sufficient world travelers.
Proposals for non-international inter-cultural experiences will be considered for approval on a case-by-case basis by the GCP Review Committee. Suitable substitutions for international travel must involve immersion in another culture and/or foster global-awareness.
All students wishing to apply a travel experience toward GCP certification must complete this Google form.
Travel ideally completed by end of junior year, although earlier completion will allow for more time to address other program components!
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMPONENT: Students must complete 30 hours of community service that is GCP related. The service must expose the students to another world culture and will, ideally, employ the students' world language skills.
Students should seek approval through the GCP Global Service Google Form before engaging in the community service.
Service ideally completed by start of senior year
GLOBAL FOCUS PROJECT: Students must select an aspect of a foreign country or region's culture, political system, history, geography or economy, and engage in a minimum of three activities that will enable them to explore this area of interest.
The activities must be outside of assigned class work, and in addition to activities that are in conjunction with the GCP travel experience. These activities may include, but are not limited to, reading books that create global awareness, watching films, preparing culinary specialties and attending cultural events or lectures.
A double-spaced, 3-4 page essay, synthesizing what they have learned from these activities must be submitted as part of the GCP Portfolio, using the Global Focus Project Form.
Projects ideally completed by 12/31 of senior year.
PORTFOLIO AND REFLECTION: By April 1 of their senior year (March 15 for students who are participating in Senior Project), students will submit a portfolio that includes:
the completed GCP Focus Project form and essay
the completed and approved GCP Academic Alternative Proposal form (if applicable)
a reflective essay of 250-500 words, reflecting upon the travel and/or global service experience
a proposal for the GCP presentation
PRESENTATION: As a culminating activity, students must develop a presentation for staff and/or students in which they share their specific experience in the Global Citizenship Program. The students will meet with the coordinator to plan this presentation.
Presentation completed before embarking on Senior Project, if applicable, and before April vacation in other cases.
