GCP Program Requirements
(WITH SUGGESTED TIMELINE)
(WITH SUGGESTED TIMELINE)
LANGUAGE COMPONENT: Students must take a language through level 4 and receive a final grade of 'C' in each level. Alternate approaches may be applied toward satisfaction of the GCP academic requirement on a case-by-case basis by submitting a completed GCP Academic Alternative Proposal Form to the GCP Review Committee.*
Courses taken throughout high school OR form submitted at onset of pursuit of alternative program
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL COMPONENT: The travel program the student uses must provide a significant opportunity to interact and connect with the local culture and people. A sight-seeing tour would not be appropriate for this program. Proposals for non-international inter-cultural experiences will be considered. All students must complete the GCP International Travel Experience Approval form prior to traveling.
Travel ideally completed by end of junior year, although earlier completion will allow for more time to address other program components!
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMPONENT: Students must complete 30 hours of community service that is GCP related. The service must expose the students to another world culture and will, ideally, employ the students' world language skills. Students must seek approval through the GCP Global Service form before engaging in the community service.
Service ideally completed by start of senior year
GLOBAL FOCUS PROJECT: Students must select an aspect of a country's culture, political system, history, geography, or economy, and engage in a minimum of three activities that will enable them to explore this area of interest. These activities will be outside of academic work at MHS and will be separate from activities that are part of the International Travel component. Suggestions for activities are reading books, watching films, attending cultural events, interviewing members of the culture, etc. Students will submit a double-spaced, 3-4 page essay synthesizing what they have learned.
Projects ideally completed by 12/31 of senior year.
PORTFOLIO AND REFLECTION: By April 1 of their senior year (March 15 for students who are participating in Senior Project), students will submit a portfolio that includes:
PRESENTATION: As a culminating activity, students must develop a presentation for staff and/or students in which they share their specific experience in the Global Citizenship Program. The students will meet with the coordinator to plan this presentation.
Presentation completed before embarking on Senior Project, if applicable, and before April vacation in other cases.
