Math is all around us. The more you are aware of that, the more you will see. One question I often get asked, especially as the math gets into higher levels is, "When will I ever use this?" My answer to that question is you may not. Some things you will be learning this year, you might never use again after you leave school. But my goal as your teacher has two parts. The first is that you can. You are learning things that give you the opportunity for a future in which you will use the things you learn this year. You are simply opening doors to fields that you don't even know you are interested in yet. And you'll be able to go through those doors because you learned all these things you didn't know you'd use. The second part is that you are unstoppable. You can learn whatever you want. You are a problem solver. You can be faced with any sort of problem, and solve it. What a life skill that is!
Resources
Edgems (this is available to them online and will be given directions on how to access through Powerschool),
Google Classroom (I will post MANY how to videos of example problems here)
MobyMax (there will be weekly expectations).
Extra practice will most likely be needed. The students have the option to take home their books with answers in the back for the odd questions. They can also log in to the online portal for online practice and suggested websites.
Parents and students are strongly encouraged to check PowerSchool. There is an app with a login.
We will be using a weighted grade book this year. Elysian Middle School has in class learning objectives based on the Mathematical Practices.
Daily work: 30%
Assessments/Quizzes: 70%
Daily work includes in-class learning objectives based upon the mathematical practices and assignments. To earn full 16 classroom learning points for the day, students must exhibit progress towards the daily learning standards. Each mathematical practice is worth two points. I will try to leave comments in google classroom if full points are not earned that day. Assignments will usually be assigned once a week. They might be finished in class, or they may need to be finished at home.
Assessments will be given at the end of units. The assessment process takes place over three days. Day one will be test A. Day two will be going over mistakes from test A, taking any new notes, and going home with a plan of what learning targets need to be studied. Day three will be test B. Students will only need to complete the problems that were missed on test A.
YES, WE DID SOMETHING IMPORTANT WHILE YOU WERE ABSENT. Students are responsible for getting any work missed during an absence. Students have the same number of days absent to make up missed work. Most homework is assigned in google classroom. I recommend parents signing in with the student account. You can see more that way. I also have a “while you were out” box of handouts organized by date.
