We will be reading a variety of texts this year. After reading, students will practice using “Accountable Talk” to discuss the theme within the stories. “Accountable Talk” encourages all students participate in class discussions for the purpose of digging deeper into the story. Students may begin with sentence starters such as:
I agree with _______ because _________.
I disagree with ________ because _________.
Can you explain more about _________?
Page ____ makes me think that/of ________.
I predict _____ because ____________.
Students are asked to look at the person speaking, share the talk time, make clear and accurate statements, speak at an appropriate pace and volume, refer to the text for evidence to support their statements, consider other points of view, ask authentic questions, and paraphrase what others have said.
Participating in structured, whole-class discussions promotes genuine, intellectual learning that not only builds individual skills but strengthens the community within the classroom.
