My research objective is to carry out application oriented research in the domain of Power Electronics, Motor Drives and Machine Design. Today India has specific need for power applications. I try to find out India centric solutions through deep innovation. The BOM cost reduction is one way to optimize a solution. However as a researcher, I try to find out an alternative to the existing solutions for cost cutting. For example our VSI/CSI fed Active Reactive Induction Motor Drive solution can reduce the cost of existing Medium Voltage drive solutions by 75%.
Rare Earth Magnet Free Motors: Currently I am working closely with industries and Material Science department and Applied Mechanics Department of IIT Madras to find alternative to Rare earth Permanent Based motors. Our approach is Synchronous Reluctance Machine based solutions (Ferrite assisted/ Zero Magnet). We are developing both axial and radial flux based machine for the same for automotive and industry grade applications.
Medium Voltage Applications: Medium Voltage research for Power Electronics (1.1kV-11kV) is highly neglected in India contrary to USA and Europe. We have very few company produces solutions in this domain. At IIT Madras we established a Medium Voltage laboratory and carried out several works in this domain with industry collaborations in last decade. we are working on Solid State Transformer, Low cost Active Reactive Induction Motor Drive, Active Gate Driver assisted Series Connected SiC MOSFET based converters, Cascaded Multilevel Converters for Induction Motor Drive, Traction Inverter for railways, 1MW Induction Motor drive, 400kW PMSM drives for strategic applications with industry.
EV Applications: We are working for last 10 years for high frequency link inverters with SiC switches (DAB,LLC, SRDAB) which are the heart of EV chargers. Currently we are developing 30kW EV chargers for industry. we already developed 8kW onboard chargers for the industry. We also give integrated solutions (both machine design and Drive development) for EV applications. Recently we developed 30kW 6 Phase liquid cooled PMSM drives. We developed multipolar SynRM and ferrite assisted solutions for the same.
