Helping Your Kindergartner with Homework

The purpose of homework:

• To review what has already been learned in school
• To extend learning from a school setting to a home setting

Homework is not:

• A time when parents should be teaching their children a new concept because they did not understand it in school
  • If this occurs, please send in a note explaining that your kindergartner was unable to complete the homework. That way, we will be aware that we need to continue on this topic, or provide extra help to the student in school.
• Something that should take a long time

Parents' Role in Homework Help:

• Read the directions to your kindergartner
• An active participant if the homework involves playing a game together
• A guide who may give occasional hints

Parents should not:

• Do the homework for their kindergartner
• Give out the answers right away
• Have their child complete homework alone
