Homework will be assigned nightly Monday through Thursday. Math will be assigned almost every night.
Occasionally homework will be assigned on the weekend, especially if there is an upcoming test or quiz.
Homework is displayed on the front board daily for students. Students are responsible for copying down each assignment in the HAB (Homework Assignment Book). During the first month of school, I will assist students in getting the homework copied down correctly and in the correct blocks. In that time, I will also walk them through the correct books to take out during pack up time. Gradually, the responsibility will be turned over to the students.
Homework will now be graded on a weekly basis. This supplemental grade for Language Arts and Math is based on homework completion and timeliness, not accuracy. Thank you for your continued support!
**In third grade we strive to instill responsibility in our students. We feel that holding the students accountable will prepare them for the expectations in future grades.
For that reason, we do not post homework online. It is the student's responsibility to correctly copy down their homework each day and take home the proper materials.
Tips and Advice
Homework reinforces the lessons that are taught in the classroom each day. It is meant to serve as practice.
In third grade homework should typically take about 30 minutes. In the beginning, expect it to take a little longer as students adjust to the format and expectations.
Parents should not necessarily need to sit with a student to complete every part of homework, however, there will be times that assistance is needed. Checking over your student's homework once it is completed can be greatly beneficial.
Because studying is somewhat new to third graders, students will need parental guidance at home to prepare for tests or quizzes. Ways parents can help might include: asking questions, reading over the material in the book or study guide together, making flash cards and creating mock tests or quizzes.
While we realize homework can often be difficult, we ask that parents do not complete the homework for your child. Homework should be completed by the student and in the student's handwriting.
Students should have a quiet space with little distractions when completing homework.
If homework is becoming a daunting task at home, try setting a timer to encourage the process to move along more smoothly. Break larger assignments down into smaller chunks. ("You have three minutes to complete this part")
Create an end goal or reward once all homework is completed.
Remember to stay calm and be positive. Chances are if you are feeling frustrated by homework, your student probably is too. If there is something you do not understand, jot me a little note and I will reinforce it in class.
