Fluency and Comprehension Tips During Reading

Fluency- There are four components to fluency: speed, accuracy, prosody ( proper expression ) and comprehension. It is the ability to read as we speak (smoothly not bumpy). I try to remind my students not to stop after each word but rather take a breath and scoop the words. I know this can be hard especially when reading a challenging word. In that case, just break that word apart by sound, vowel patterns, prefixes and suffixes then quickly put those sounds back together (recoding).

Comprehension- The ability to understand or gain meaning from what was read. Students will be able to discuss details in the story, characters, plot or sequencing the order of the events. Once fluency is smooth and at an appropriate speed, the comprehension ability will increase.
