Title I

What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program which provides educational assistance to students who need help to perform at their grade level in reading and/or math.

What are the goals of Title I?

How are Title I students selected?

Classroom teachers identify students who may benefit from additional instructional service.  Some things considered are scores on the the MCA tests, NWEA Assessments, DIBELS Next Assessment, chapter and unit tests in reading and math, and daily work in the classroom.  The Dawson-Boyd Title I program serves students in kindergarten through grade 6.

How are students served

in the Title I program?

Most Title I instruction occurs during an intervention time scheduled for each classroom teacher.  The Title I instructors provide reteaching and reinforcement of the skills being taught by the classroom teacher, in addition to skills that students struggle with.  Title I instructors work with Title I students individually or in small groups.  This instruction takes place Monday through Thursday for approximately 20-30 minutes each day.  While the classroom teacher is directly responsible for the academic progress of the students, classroom teachers and Title I instructors communicate daily to plan and monitor the progress of the Title I students.  Materials used by the Title I instructors are directly coordinated with the activities of the classroom teachers.

How do parents know

their child is receiving Title I help?

Parents are notified by a letter from the school when their child is receiving Title I assistance.   At conference time, parents and the teacher discuss the Title I Personalized Educational Plan for the child.  This plan enables parents to become aware of their child’s supplemental educational needs.  Parents are asked to sign the PEP, as well as a parent compact that outlines some things the parents, the student, the teacher, and the principal can do to help insure the student’s progress in school.

Who is on the Title I staff?

The Title I Coordinator is Stevens Elementary, Principal, Amy Hiedeman.  Instructors in the Title I Program include Pam Lonnquist and Amy Schlemmer.  Emily Busch also serves as an ELL assistant through out Title I programming.

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires local school districts and charter schools as recipients of ESEA Title funds to “display, in a public place, the [fraud prevention] hotline contact information ...”  The purpose is “so that any individual who observes, detects, or suspects improper use of taxpayer funds can easily report such improper use.” [ESEA Section 9203] The hotline number is 1-800-MIS-USED (1-800-647-8733).
