ASD Specialist

Hi!  My name is Krista Sivertson (see-vert-sun) and I am the Autism Spectrum Disorders Specialist at the Duluth Edison Charter Schools (DECS).  This is my 22nd year working in the special education department at DECS.  I am a special education teacher licensed in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Behavior Disorders, and Specific Learning Disabilities.  I also have an ASD Certificate and completed my Master's Degree in Special Education with a research focus on Autism, Writing, and Special Interest Areas at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.   

I really enjoy all the outdoor opportunities that the North Shore has to offer including camping, hiking, skiing, and foraging. I also love hanging out at home, reading, cooking, preserving, and creating. I have a daughter, Lena, who is a 2nd grader at North Star this year.  Our family has a yellow lab named Star, and cats Daffodil and Lilac.  

Before I started teaching at DECS I was a Personal Care Attendant, worked in group homes, was a counselor at Northwood Children's Services, and taught a course about India for Project SEEK, a gifted and talented summer enrichment program.  My bachelor's degree is in Anthropology and Sociology and I completed internships at Lakshmi Ashram (a Gandhian girls' school) and The People's Science Institute in northern India. I've also taught several courses at UMD as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Education and Human Service Professionals.
