Individual Counseling - We meet with students individually that have been referred by a teacher, parent, administrator and often by the student themselves. These are often brief solution focused meetings to address among other things emotional issues, friendship issues and grief issues.
Group Counseling - We meet with small groups of students (4-6) to address certain topics such as friendship, study skills, social skills, getting along with others, grief and loss and handling emotions.
Classroom Presentations - Classroom lessons or presentations take place in every classroom typically once or twice a month. The lessons are designed based on the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) Student Standards to cover 3 broad domains of academic, career and personal/social emotional development.
Consultation with Teachers and Parents- We meet with Teachers and Parents to promote the success of all students.
Coordination of School Wide programs and events - We coordinate school wide programs such as the monthly Powerful Character Awards, Start with Hello week, Great Kindness Challenge to name a few.
School Counseling Program Mission Statement
The mission of the school counseling program at Hillandale Elementary School is to support the various facets of the educational setting through a preventative, comprehensive, developmental model utilizing state and national competencies that address academic, career and personal/social skills. Through classroom guidance, group and individual counseling and parent and teacher consultation, each child will be given the support necessary to succeed and become a life-long learner.
