After our reading lesson for the day, we have 2-3 rounds of guided reading. Guided reading is when I read with a small group at their reading level. During this time, students get more individualized instruction. While I am working with a group, the rest of the students are busy as well. They are doing 1 of 5 Daily 5 options. These options include:
Read to Self = students reading a book of their choice around the room. Skill: working on their reading stamina, building vocabulary and comprehension skills, more exposure to literature.
Work on Writing = students writing in their Writer's Workshop notebooks, Google documents, Book Creator, etc.
Word Work = students working with words. Skill: practice the spelling and building of important third grade words. (Ex. spelling words, vocab words, word wall words)
Listen to Reading = students listening to a story on Tumblebooks or RAZ kids. Focus: listen for fluency
Read to Someone = students reading to a partner in a whisper voice. Skill: listening for fluency and checking for understanding.
At the beginning of the year, we spend time training for each area of Daily 5. We practice what it looks like and sounds like during each activity. After each round of Daily 5 we meet at the rug and discuss how the round went. For most of my students, this is the best part of our day!
