Grade Six Critical Areas of Instruction
In grade six, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio, rate, and
percentage to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve
problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the
system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using
expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking (CCSSO 2010, Grade
6 Introduction).
Students also work toward fluency with multi-digit division and multi-digit decimal operations
Grade Six Standards for Mathematical Content
The Standards for Mathematical Content emphasize key content, skills, and practices at
each grade level and support three major principles:
Focus: Instruction is focused on grade level standards.
Coherence: Instruction should be attentive to learning across grades and should link major topics within grades.
Rigor: Instruction should develop conceptual understanding, procedural skill and
22 fluency, and application.
