Message to Students: Offensive & Profane Langauge

Post date: May 2, 2016 2:27:56 PM

I sent an e-mail to all students with the following message:

Happy Monday my darling lil d-backs!

I want to address a couple issues pertaining to the use of profane and offensive language. I am hearing way too much cussing around campus. I understand that many students view cursing as "cool" and/or mature. On the contrary! Cursing in public leaves a negative impression on your character. Students can receive disciplinary consequences (referral, detention, suspension, etc) for using profane/vulgar language on school grounds and on buses. I have two things for you to think about when you speak:

1. Use language that you would use if your parents/grandparents were present!

2. I was told at an early age that people only cuss when they have nothing more intelligent to say!

Another issue I have is students using the word "nigga"! Students/People use this word as if it is socially acceptable and/or part of pop culture. Again, on the contrary!!! This word is extremely offensive and can be treated as racial discrimination! I have students try to justify using "nigga" because they are not saying "nigger". IT'S THE SAME THING!!!! Do not use this word on our campus and/or buses!!! I have ZERO tolerance for students using this word towards friends and/or peers! This is not okay! I don't care if your family uses it at home. It's not okay here!!! Students will receive disciplinary consequences for using any form of this word!!!

This also applies to students calling others "white boy", "white girl", "beaner" or any other form of racial identification/profiling. Each year, I try to create a safe environment for ALL students, regardless of color and/or other differences. I will not tolerate students harassing and/or discriminating and member of our DRA family!

Thank you,

Mr. C
