With unwavering commitment, the DIS Library team and school colleagues work together to enrich and empower learners’ creativity, empathy, inquiry, and motivation for lifelong learning in a welcoming, informative, inspirational learning environment that provides all community members with equitable access to reliable information and connective opportunities.
At the DIS Media Center, our mission is to:
o Build a collaborative, inclusive, and safe space for all community members.
o Empower future global citizens’ abilities and rights to build and act on open-minded, critical approaches to inquiry and innovation by introducing real-world connections and skills for 21st century learners.
o Inspire individuals to grow as readers by maintaining the learners’ right to choose from a diverse collection of resources, book formats, genres, and digital subscriptions.
o Guide students to grow as information literate individuals through student-centered instructional practices, reflective research experiences, and subject-specific guided inquiry projects.
o Motivate students to pursue knowledge, curiosities, and interests.
o Open and maintain learners’ access to up-to-date resources and technology tools.
The DIS Media Center fosters meaningful, engaging opportunities for all students to understand themselves as readers and thinkers with voices of their own. The guidance provided from the codes and processes developed by the ALA and AASL, as well as the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, inform the library’s expectations, methods, and objectives to assume a central role as a resource and provider of information and educational services to all members of the school community. The library and its inclusive services support the progress and curricular goals of the student-centered learning environment and community culture through close partnerships with educators, faculty members, and administrators. Experiences, materials, tools, and services provided through the library develop learners’ connections with new knowledge and interests. Our practices reflect upheld, professional principles of information access across all media formats and supports for readers’ rights (ALA).
