Anti-Semitism

  • The intense dislike and prejudice against Jewish people.

    • "The anti-Semitic policies of the Nazis in Germany proved that the family made a wise decision to move to the Netherlands. They lived in safety until 1940 when the Germans invaded and occupied the Netherlands. It did not take long before they started to implement anti-Semitic regulations. Anne and her sister were forced to go to a special Jewish school, and her father had to give up his ownership of his business." ~http://www.amsterdam.info/anne-frank/

"One day this terrible war will be over. The time will come when we will all be people again, and not just Jews! We can never be just Dutch, or just English, or whatever, we will always be Jews as well. But then, we'll want to be." ~April 4, 1944

Black Market

  • An illegal market in which goods or currencies are bought and sold in violation of rationing or controls.

"The people who supply us with food coupons have been arrested, so we have just our five black-market ration books--no coupons, no fats and oils." ~March 14, 1944

Concentration Camps

  • A penal camp where political prisoners of war are confined (usually under harsh conditions)

"Our many Jewish friends and acquaintances are being taken away in droves. The Gestapo is treating them very roughly and transporting them in cattle cars to Westerbork, the big camp in Drenthe to which they're sending all the Jews...It must be terrible in Westerbork. The people get almost nothing to eat, much less to drink, as water is available only one hour a day, and there's only one toilet and sink for several thousand people."

~October 9, 1942

Final Solution

  • The Nazi program of exterminating Jews under Hitler

Green Police (aka Gestapo)

  • The secret state police in Nazi Germany; known for its terrorist methods

"'Now we're done for,' I said, and I had visions of all fifteen of us being dragged away by the Gestapo that very night."

~March 14, 1944

Holocaust

  • An act of great destruction and loss of life

  • The Nazi program of exterminating Jews under Hitler

Ration Books

  • An official document entitling the holder to a ration (a fixed portion) of food, clothes, or other goods.

"Bread is delivered daily by a very nice baker, a friend of Mr. Kleiman's. Of course we don't have as much as we did at home, but it's enough. We also purchase ration books on the black market. The price keeps going up; it's already risen from 27 to 33 guilders. And that for mere sheets of printed paper!"

Secret Annex

  • The place where Anne Frank and others hid from the Nazis. The hiding place is located in an empty section of the building owned by Otto Frank's company. While business continues, as usual, in the front part of the building, there are people hiding in the annex.

"The Annex is an ideal place to hide in. It may be damp and lopsided, but there's probably not a more comfortable hiding place in all of Amsterdam. No, in all of Holland."

~July 4, 1942

Star of David

  • A six-pointed star formed from two equilateral triangles; an emblem symbolizing Judaism.

Our freedom was severely restricted by a series of anti-Jewish decrees: Jews were required to wear a yellow star; Jews were required to turn in their bicycles; Jews were forbidden to use trams; Jews were forbidden to ride in cars, even their own; Jews were required to do their shopping between 3:00 and 5:00 P.M.; Jews were required to frequent only Jewish-owned barbershops and beauty parlors; Jews were forbidden to be out on the streets between 8:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M.; Jews were forbidden to attend theaters, movies or any other forms of entertainment; Jews were forbidden to use swimming pools, tennis courts, hockey fields or any other athletic fields; Jews were forbidden to go rowing; Jews were forbidden to take part in any athletic activity in public; Jews were forbidden to sit in their gardens or those of their friends after 8:00 P.M.; Jews were forbidden to visit Christians in their homes; Jews were required to attend Jewish schools, etc.”
