Interested in teaching as a possible profession? Interested in the role education plays in society? If so, this is the class for you! Students will be involved in a fast paced, innovative, hands-on curriculum where they gain knowledge about teaching and learning. Teacher Cadets will develop skills that are helpful in college and beyond, such as presentation, public speaking, writing, communication and reasoning. Students experience the rewards of teaching through a “mini teaching” field experience as a part of the course work. This is a yearlong, sequential honors elective course with college credit options. Teacher Cadet is aligned with the Colorado Teacher Licensure Standards.

Selection process includes:

• • 3.0 GPA. (students with 2.8 – 3.0 must be approved by instructor and counselor)

  • Must submit:

    • Application with essay

    • Unofficial Transcript

    • Three teacher recommendations.

  • You do not have to plan to teach to be considered.

The course includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Learning about one’s self—recognizing, appreciating, and developing personal skills

• Information about our educational system from historical, political, and professional viewpoints, focusing on the learner, the school, and the teacher

• Instructional, motivational, and discipline tools for teaching

• First-hand knowledge of teaching through practical experience in the elementary, middle, and high school classrooms

• Lessons on moral, psychosocial, physical, and cognitive development from birth through adolescence (plus a detailed focus on “barriers to learning”)

• Creative activities such as puppet shows, book writing, debating, portfolios, etc.

• Information about scholarship and career opportunities
