Skills of Focus: Character Traits, Character Development (Growth & Change), Theme, Plot Elements (Exposition, Conflict, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Resolution)

As we dive into the second quarter of 5th grade, we will continue working on a number of different reading skills to deeper our interpretation of stories that we read. In addition to continuing our work on character development and theme, we will be learning all of the elements that determine plot within a story. As we continue to explore different story elements, students will show their understanding in a number of ways. These skills will be practiced using short stories, picture books and a novel of choice that students will select to read and show their skills. These skills will transfer over into writing as well as we blend reading and writing into more of a literacy framework.

We will also continue building our knowledge of using text-evidence in reading responses to prove thinking using the R.A.C.E. strategy. Lessons regarding prefixes, suffixes, homophones and synonyms will also be taught to enhance vocabulary skills of all 5th graders during this time. I am excited to see the growth continue!
