What you may see if a student has a Mental Health Disorder

Information Provided by MACMH in partnership with CA Dept. of Ed and Placer County Office of Ed. (2014)

Some of the common behaviors a child may exhibit if they have a mental health disorder are listed below. We all recognize that from time to time, many children will display one or more of these behaviors. This is normal during childhood and adolescence. There is, however, a real difference between an occasional and brief problem and a mental health disorder.

If you suspect your child may be experiencing an emotional problem, consider the following three things:

Frequency: How often does the child exhibit these symptoms?

Duration: How long do the symptoms last?

Intensity: How severe are the symptoms?

Many symptoms of mental health disorders can also be normal behaviors seen in children. Behaviors that may be an early warning sign of a mental health disorder usually have a greater frequency, last longer, and are more intense.

Please speak with your Mental Health Provider/Medical Doctor if you believe that your child has a Mental Health Disorder.

There may be a cause for concern if a child always or usually exhibits some of these behaviors.*
