Description:

In 7th grade math our instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and geometric constructions, and working with two and three dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

Technology:

The main calculator that we will be using in this class is the TI 84 plus. This is the calculator that is used in the 8th grade and the high school for all levels of math. Students are able to purchase these at Wal-Mart but this is not required because they are quite expensive. When necessary, these calculators will be provided by the teacher but will not be able to go home for use on assignments so we strongly urge students to purchase these for that reason.

Textbook:

There is no textbook that will be used this year. Because of this, we suggest that students bring in a 3-Ring binder or other type of folder to keep all handouts and assignments throughout the year.

Absences:

When a student is absent, they are required to look up any missing assignments on the teacher website. If the student does not have access to the internet, they need to call the office before 11:00 to request work to be picked up.

Other Required Materials:

Loose leaf notebook paper

Pencils (all work must be shown in pencil)

  • Pens (to check papers, make corrections and add emphasis to notes)
  • Sticky Notes
  • Highlighters
  • Wish List
  • Disinfectant Wipes
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Items for a prize box (school supplies or candy)

Grading:

Quarterly grades will be determined by homework, quizzes and tests. All homework assignments must be completed with all work shown on time to receive full credit.

Grading Scale

80% Quizzes (1), Tests (2)

20% Homework

90 – 100 = A

80 – 89 = B

70 – 79 = C

60 – 69 = D

0 – 59 = F

Tests and Quizzes

A test or quiz will be given each week (given that it is not a short week). These tests and quizzes will go along with the unit that is being taught. We will not use a textbook so it is best if you keep up with all worksheets and handouts throughout the year to help you on these tests. Study material will be posted on the teacher website in addition to classwork and notes.

Homework:

Homework is worth 20% of your grade in this class. It is used as a form of practice each night of the skill(s) learned in class. Most of the time, homework is graded on completion because I want everyone to try every problem. All homework must be completed in pencil. All work must be legible and completely shown to receive full credit. If you lose or forget your assignment, go to the teacher website to get a new copy. If you can’t print it, work the problems out on a piece of paper to bring in to class.

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

Students are expected to be on time, prepared with all materials, have completed homework assignments prior to each class, and to participate in class discussions, including board work and presentations. In addition, students are expected to abide by the rules and procedures in the Ellis Middle School Student Handbook.
