Mrs. Shepherd, Teacher
Hello! Welcome to First Grade! I am thrilled that you will be part of our class this year! We are going to travel on new adventures and our brains are going to grow even bigger than last year. In our class, we will make mistakes, rise to challenges, learn to be outstanding citizens and most importantly have fun!
This will be my 12th year of teaching. I worked for five years at Mocksville Elementary School and this will be my seventh year at CZE. I attended undergraduate (Elementary Education) and graduate school (Reading Education) at Appalachian State University. Go Apps! I was named Teacher of the Year at CZE in 2018. My husband's name is Kris and he is a real estate agent and is a sports fanatic. We have a 4 year old named Sawyer who loves animals, swimming, and reading. We love going to the beach and spending time outdoors. We have two fur babies named Olive and Baxter.
Here are a few of my favorite things:
Drink: Caramel Lattes
Snack: Chex Mix
Animal: Giraffe
Store: Marshalls or Target
Color: Purple and Green
School Supply: Flair Pens
Birthday: March 26th
Restaurant: Chick-fila
This year I'll be using Whole Brain Teaching in our class!
Our class will have 6 rules:
1. Follow Directions Quickly
2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Make Smart Choices.
5. Make our dear team stronger.
Diamond Rule: Keep your eye on the target.
After practicing these rules for the first several weeks, students will be given practice cards if they break the rule. They will have to practice the rule for several minutes at recess. In addition to practicing, they may receive a logical consequence depending on the offense. I will contact you if we are having any major issues or repeated offenses.
I'll be introducing students to something new called the Super Improver Wall! Students will be awarded "stars" on Dojo for showing improvement on behavior and academics. There are 13 levels from turtle to peregrine falcon. Students will have to earn a certain amount of stars before they level up. If they reach the highest level, they will be considered a Living Legend in my class and have their picture on the wall FOREVER!
Below is an example of how this will look in my classroom:
