Please remember that teachers 'weight' their grades. This means that instead of averaging total points to find the final grade, a teacher would assign weights to categories. For example, all homework points might be worth 20% of the final grade, quizzes worth 30% and tests worth 50% of the final grade. The category weights may change throughout the quarter depending on the number of assignments in each category.
