Education Connections — Differentiation is a key part of any ESL or mainstream classroom—it involves determining the skill levels of your students and making sure your lessons are challenging to all students across all levels. Differentiation becomes especially important in classes where English learners and native English speakers have shared instruction. While differentiation might seem intimidating, there are a few small steps you can take in both the planning process, and lesson delivery, that can help make sure your lessons are accessible to all students across language levels.

ESL and Math at the Elementary Level — For young English-language learners, language skills can be a barrier not just to reading but math as well. Educators and researchers working in two school districts here hope that helping students "talk through" number problems will assist them in meeting the state's new math standards.

Focus on how pronunciation is reflected in student writing. — In the crush of course content each semester, teachers can feel forced to choose between content and language objectives. At our alternative high school, we found that as long as students' work reflected content knowledge, teachers tended to tolerate ambiguity in students' oral and written language production. More specifically, teachers who ignored a lack of articulation in oral speech found (not surprisingly) that students' written work reflected their oral language. Once we made this connection, we realized the disservice to students. Overlooking inarticulate speaking or writing meant we were bypassing opportunities to guide students to a more academic spoken English, which would benefit students in their future classes and careers.
