Should I Take Honors or Standard?

Which English Class is Right For Me?

Be sure to consider how many other challenging courses you are taking next year when making any decision on honors courses.

The main difference between honors and standard is text complexity, pacing, level of independence, and a higher level of expectations in assignments (not necessarily length of assignments but the complexity of thought).

I should consider taking Honors English if…

  • I really enjoy English class, and I want to be challenged at a higher level - Honors students understand that high school English is a rich subject that integrates history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.

  • I have a good work ethic and always put in my best effort

  • I am a good reader and writer, and I enjoy a challenge knowing there are supports in place to assist me.

  • I enjoy utilizing inferential, higher-level thinking skills.

  • I consistently prepare and contribute during class.

  • I am a highly motivated, independent worker and am able to manage my time; there will be frequent assigned readings to be completed outside of class.

  • I have demonstrated a pattern of consistent homework and project completion.

  • I am willing to self-advocate to meet with my teacher for additional help.

  • I am willing to revise my work until I exceed the standards set before me.

  • I consistently persevere through difficult readings and writings.

  • I have confidence in my current English class's literacy skills since there will be infrequent skill review.

  • I am consistently “exceeding standards” on English assignments and on standardized tests.

  • I am considering taking AP (Advanced Placement) or Honors courses in my high school career.
