About

ANDREW DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Andrew Driver Education Program is an integrated two-phase program taught over an 18-week semester. The two phases consist of classroom and behind the wheel (on street driving), which exceed the requirements set by the State of Illinois.

Students must receive a passing grade in a minimum of eight (8) courses during the previous two (2) semesters. Students must then complete an application for instructional permit to the Secretary of State with a check for $20.00 along with passing a written permit test and vision test.

Students must pass both the classroom and driving phases in order to be eligible to get their license. They must also attend a minimum of thirty 30 hours of classroom and drive for a total (BTW) of six (6) hours. State law also requires each student to complete fifty (50) hours of practice driving with an adult (outside of class) to qualify for an Illinois license. Ten (10) of those hours must be in night driving conditions. These fifty (50) hours must be documented on the student driver log sheet, which is available for download on the Andrew High School website.

General Information:

Attendance: Students having an excused absence must make up any missed work. For each day the student misses school, he or she will have the same number of days to make up the work. It is the responsibility of the student to see the teacher to get the make-up work. All students must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction (this is a State Law). At the beginning of the semester students will be notified on the total number of absences that they can have for the semester while still meeting state requirements for classroom/behind the wheel. That information will be posted on our website for parents to view. Students missing more than the allotted days WILL BE DROPPED FROM DRIVER ED!

It is very important that you are here every day!

Grading: Each student will be required to have a spiral notebook. All test, quizzes, homework and class activities will be included in your grade. All points will be cumulative for the semester. This means all grades will carry the same weight. The weighting of grades for the quarter is as follows:

80% - 18 week grade

50%- Homework

50%- Test

20% -Final Exam

100%=A+ 98-92=A 91-90=A-

89-88=B+ 97-82=B 81-80=B-

79-78=C+ 78-72=C 71-70=C-

69-68=D+ 67-62=D 61-60=D-

59-less=F

Pass/Grade Option-A Pass/Grade option is available to 11th and 12th grade students (*) in District 230 for a maximum of one course not required for graduation per semester and one during summer sessions beginning the summer prior to 11th grade. The purpose of this option is to offer students the opportunity to take courses not required for graduation without having the grade affect his/her GPA (Grade Point Average). (*Driver’s Education may be taken Pass/Grade by students not yet at 11th grade status.)

Cooperated Driver Testing Program:Students who earn a grade of “A” or in the Classroom portion AND the Behind the wheel portion are eligible to take the driver road test at Andrew High School. Grades are NOT averaged for this test. Students MUST meet the requirement in EACH class to be eligible.

The following guidelines will apply for all students:

1. A student must declare his/her intention to use the Pass/Grade option to the end of the first quarter for any year–long course and before the end of the first or third quarter for any semester course. Once a decision has been made to take a class Pass/Grade, no change in status will be allowed. Pass/Grade may be used to satisfy the initial NCAA eligibility, BUT may be interpreted as the school’s LOWEST passing grade (CHSD230 = D-).

2. Students electing to take a course Pass/Grade will be expected to complete all assignments and will be graded like all other students in the class.

· Students earning a “C” or higher using the approved classroom grading scale will be assigned a grade of “P” (pass). A grade of “P” will not be counted toward the overall GPA.

· Students earning a grade of “C–“ or lower using the approved classroom grading scale will be assigned the actual grade earned and the grade will be figured into the overall GPA.
