Course Syllabus Biology 12-22

Biology 12-22 is a laboratory based course that introduces students to the study of living things, and focuses on the interconnection of organisms and their environments. All levels of biological organization are investigated from molecules to cells, from populations to ecosystems, the Biological and Geological history of Planet Earth, and ultimately the evolution of all living things. This course involves substantial laboratory and field work, as well as the development of critical reading, writing and problem solving skills. Together, we will work to answer these BIG questions...

SEMESTER 1

Unit 1: Ecosystem Dynamics- How Can the Earth's Living Systems Be Sustainably Maintained?

Unit 2: Cycles of Matter and Energy Flow in Ecosystems- How Is Matter and Energy Moved Throughout Living Systems?

Unit 3: Organization of Matter and Energy Flow In Living Systems- What Is the Role of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration in Ecosystems?

Unit 4: Growth, Development, and Homeostasis In Organisms- How Is Matter and Energy Used By Organisms In Order to Stay Alive?

SEMESTER 2

Unit 5: Cell Structure, Organization and Function- How are organisms organized on a molecular, cellular, and functional level in order to survive and reproduce?

Unit 6: Evolution of Populations by Natural Selection- How Are ALL Living Things Related Through a Common Ancestor?

Unit 7: Interdependent Relationships In Ecosystems- How does the interaction of organisms and their environment affect their ability to survive and reproduce?

Unit 8: Geological and Biological History of Planet Earth- How have the changes that have occurred on Planet Earth over time affected the development and changes in living systems?
