Topics and Skills Covered This Year
Reading: Vocabulary, comprehension of fiction and nonfiction text, characterization, cause and effect, inferences and conclusions, facts versus opinions, main ideas, summarization, and phonics. Spelling lists are pattern-based.
Vocabulary: Building vocabulary by exploring antonyms, synonyms, context clues, homophones, and idioms.
Writing: Excellence in Writing Curriculum which focuses on writing keyword outlines, rewriting fiction and nonfiction text using a variety of dress-ups and decorations, and presentation skills.
Language Arts: Spelling, correct use of capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech, and homophones.
Social Studies: Geography skills, citizenship, American people, resources, government, early Americans, U.S. colonies, and Illinois.
Math: Numeration, Adding and subtracting up to 5 digit numbers. Reading and writing numbers through the millions. Multiplying by 1 and 2 digit factors. Finding up to 3 digit quotients with remainders. Exploring fractions, geometry, estimation, problem solving, and measurement.
Science: Physical Science (Energy), Earth Science (Rocks and Minerals, Water, and Weather), Life Science (Animals as Living Things).
