Can the CSS network handle that many devices?
Recent upgrades in the CSS network have facilitated more intensive academic use of tablets and laptops. Personal devices afflicted with viruses, spyware or apps with a negative impact on the network may be blocked from accessing the network. BYOD approved personal devices will again be allowed to access WiFi once the issue has been resolved.
CSS runs a filtered connection to the internet, what does that mean?
On campus, access to the website categories of gaming, gambling, pornography, and proxy servers are currently blocked.
Is a Smartphone an acceptable device for BYOD?
At this point in time, SmartPhones are not adequate devices for the CSS BYOD program. To insure bandwidth for educational needs, CSS reduces the bandwidth available for smartphones on the Wifi networks used for BYOD.
What if I don't own a device?
The cost of powerful laptops, tablets and ChromeBooks is less then ever before with many options between $200 and $400. With advance notice, CSS will have a limited number of ChromeBooks to lease to students for a year. (~$100) Students are expected to bring their own charged device every day. The CSS Tech office has a limited number of Chromebooks to loan for the day to students who may have problems with their personal device. Students who forget their device, or have an uncharged device may not be able to participate in that session's connected learning activity but will still be responsible for completing the requirements of that session.
Who will maintain my device if the hardware is damaged or if the OS or software needs technical support?
Students and families are responsible for maintaining and replacing damaged or obsolete devices. helpdesk@css.org will assist with using a device in school and for eLearning but we are not a licensed repair center.
How will I charge my device?
Students are responsible for charging their devices before the school day and for keeping track of their particular device cord. The school will provide access to AC outlets and/or USB charging stations in many of the areas where students work.
How do I print?
Devices with USB cables can plug in and print to computer lab printers. The tech office will assist students installing printer drivers for school printers located in the computer labs, the library or other commons areas. Documents in Google Drive can be printed from lab computers or using CloudPrint via shared printers.
