Section Contents: Lily, Michael, Skinner

In Brian Friel's play, The Freedom of the City, he demonstrates the importance of an individual's identity and ontology, especially concerning the risks they are willing to take - or would like to take - to create or establish their identity as well as to change their current situations. The play focuses on three main characters who are affected by Britain's colonization of their home, Northern Ireland. The following links provide in-depth descriptions of each of the main characters. This includes their backgrounds, purpose in the play, and the development of their character and identity in the play.
