Fifth Grade Mathematics
The fifth grade mathematics course provides a coherent progression of skills and concepts from previous years into sixth grade and middle school. Students prepare for their future math careers by becoming mathematicians who reason logically, predict, construct arguments, work with precision and perseverance, and solve problems visually and abstractly. Developing a love for the subject, as well as tenacity to work through challenges, are goals for all fifth graders!
Fluency with performing multi-digit multiplication is a goal throughout the school year. Once this skill has been mastered, students are well prepared to divide with multi-digit numbers and apply skills in real-world problem solving situations.
Fifth Grade Next Generation State Standards require students to:
understand the place value system
perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to the hundredths
use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions
apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions
understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition
convert like measurement units within a given measurement system
represent and interpret data
write and interpret numerical expressions
analyze patterns and relationships
graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world problems
classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties
Homework practice is assigned on most days. Please ask your child to explain what they are learning and to try to "teach" it to you! This is one of the best ways to achieve mastery. Parents, if you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact via email at kcoones@cooperstowncs.org.
