Robert T. Craig

Robert T. Craig is Professor Emeritus of Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he joined the faculty in 1990. Previously he studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (BA) and Michigan State University (MA, PhD) and taught at Penn State, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Temple University. He retired from full time teaching in 2014.

Craig is a Fellow and Past President (2003-2004) of the International Communication Association (ICA), and a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association (NCA). He was founding editor of the ICA journal, Communication Theory, which began publication in 1991. He was co-editor of the International Encyclopedia of Communication Theory and Philosophy (four volumes and online, Wiley-Blackwell, 2016), and was founding series editor (2008-2021) of the ICA Handbook Series.

Publishing and lecturing widely in the fields of communication theory and philosophy, discourse analysis, and argumentation, Craig is best known for his research on the constitutive metamodel of communication theory, the philosophy of communication as a practical discipline, and studies of metadiscourse. His most recent book (co-authored with Karen Tracy) is Grounded Practical Theory: Investigating Communication Problems (Cognella, 2021). He is currently researching arguments about communication in public discourse and working on a new book about metadiscourse and communication theory.
