OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHOIR STUDENTS
Circle The State With Song (6th Grade only)
Provides an opportunity for music students to work with other students in the region to perform children’s choral repertoire of excellent quality with guest choral clinicians for an exciting choral experience.
All-State Children's Choir (6th Grade only)
Children's All-State Honor Choir provides exceptional music students a chance to work with guest choral clinicians on challenging music with other students from across the state. This honor is achieved only through an audition process. An audition fee will be paid by the student. It will be the responsibility of the student to prepare for this audition, but instruction will be given by the director at school. If chosen for the choir, students will attend a two-day clinic concluding with a concert, open to the public. Concert tickets may be purchased by the public. Students will stay two nights in a Tulsa hotel and will be responsible for expenses.
Young Men’s Vocal Workshop (Men only)
Since 2006, the OU School of Music has welcomed sixth through twelfth grade boys from across the state to the Norman campus for a one-day choral festival of inspiring and enriching music making. The Young Men’s Vocal Workshop, otherwise known as Real Men Sing, is led by OU choral faculty members and distinguished guest conductors. Each year, approximately 800 young men representing scores of high schools, junior high & middle schools, and elementary & intermediate schools. Participants in the Young Men’s Vocal Workshop not only rehearse and perform together, but also they enjoy performances by the OU Men’s Glee Club, OU faculty soloists, and current OU voice students.
All-District Honor Choir (Grades 7 - 12)
Students may audition for the regional District Honor Choir. An audition fee of will be paid by the student. Identified audition pieces must be purchased by the student. (These same pieces will be used for All-State auditions.) It will be the responsibility of the student to prepare for this audition, but instruction will be given by the directors at school. If chosen for the choir, students will attend a two-day clinic concluding with a concert, open to the public. Students will be responsible for their expenses.
All-State OCDA Junior High Mixed and Treble Choirs (Grades 7 - 9)
Students may audition for the All-State OCDA Junior High Choir. An audition fee will be paid by the student. Identified audition pieces must be purchased by the student. All students must compete in the first round of auditions. If the student scores in the top 30 in their section, they will advance to the second round of auditions. It will be the responsibility of the student to prepare for these auditions, but instruction will be given by the directors at school. Two choirs will be chosen for the clinic. If chosen for the choir, students will attend a clinic concluding in a concert open to the public. Concert tickets may be purchased by the public. Students will stay two nights in a hotel in OKC and will be responsible for expenses.
All-State OCDA High School Jazz Choir (Grades 10 - 12)
Students may audition for the All-State OCDA Jazz Choir. An audition fee will be paid by the student. This audition is the most competitive of the All-State auditions, as they only accept 2 students per voice part. The audition will consist of two elements:
1) a performance of a prepared piece, and
2) a 30-second vocal improvisation over a standard jazz form and chord progression.
The first element will take place at each singer’s scheduled audition time, with the second following immediately afterward in a different room with different judges. If chosen for the choir, students will attend a clinic concluding in a concert open to the public. Concert tickets may be purchased by the public. Students will stay two nights in a hotel in OKC and will be responsible for expenses.
All-State OMEA Mixed and Treble Choirs (Grades 10 - 12)
Students may audition for the All-State OMEA chorus. An audition fee will be paid by the student. Identified audition pieces must be purchased by the student. Students must compete in a first round of auditions. If the student scores in the top 30 in his/her section, he/she will advance to the second round of auditions, two weeks later. It will be the responsibility of the student to prepare for these auditions, but instruction will be given by the directors at school. The top 25 scores from each voice part will be chosen for the Mixed Choir. Because of the large number of female entries for the All-State OMEA Choir, a second choir for trebles is available. The next 30 scores in each of the female voice parts from the All-State OMEA auditions will be selected for the All-State OMEA Treble Choir. If chosen for one of the choirs, students will attend a clinic concluding in a concert. Concert tickets may be purchased by the public. Students will stay three nights in a hotel in Tulsa and will be responsible for expenses.
OSSAA Solo/Ensemble Contest(s) (Grades 7 - 12)
Students may sing a solo at this contest. The solo entry fee will be paid by the student. The school will provide all the music necessary. Solos and ensembles will be learned at home and rehearsed at school. Solos and ensembles must be memorized. Solos and ensembles receiving a Superior rating will be awarded a medal. Students in grades 9 - 12 will be allowed to compete at the State level. NEW THIS YEAR: For The Love of Music and Chocolate! This fundraiser is associated with the District Solo/Ensemble contest, where paying audience members can enjoy hot and cold beverages (and some snacks) while listening to soloists and ensemble members sing their pieces on stage at The Crown Theater. Quartz Mountain (Grades 9 - 12)
The Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute (OSAI) is an intensive 2-week residential school that provides professional training to artistically advanced Oklahoma High School students, including graduating seniors, in the visual, literary, and performing arts. They offer training in the disciplines of acting, chorus, creative writing, dance, drawing and painting, film and video, orchestra, and photography. OSAI faculty artists include winners of the Pulitzer Prize, and the Academy, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony awards. You'll join over 250 students from across the state as you study your chosen field and attend or participate in performances, gallery openings, film screenings, poetry readings, and more. Optional activities include nature hikes, karaoke night, a talent show, and a dance. Auditions are usually in the spring and are done via electronic submission. Click here for more information!
