AP U.S. Government and Politics 2023-2024 Course Syllabus

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians:

Welcome to Advanced Placement Government!  I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to teach classes filled with such bright and talented students, and I am excited about what the year holds in store.  I have taught for thirty-four years with an emphasis in United States History and the Foundations of Government.  My educational experience includes a B.A. degree in Political Science and Pre-law, with a minor in Economics and an M.A. in History.  My thesis project emphasized the creation of American National Identity in the nineteenth century through Parson Mason Locke Weems’ writings about George Washington. I am also currently an adjunct instructor of American Government (Political Science 2) at Clovis Community College.

I look forward to a great year in which the students will walk away with a strong foundation in (and hopefully a deeper appreciation for and interest in) U.S. Government and Politics.

I am a firm believer that communication holds the key to a successful year in school.  Feel free to

e-mail me (address below) if you have any questions.  The families I serve are of the highest importance to me, and I will get back to you as soon as possible

A.P. Government (APG) is a challenging, college-level course that will require a commitment of consistent time and effort in order to be successful.  There are four keys to success:  ATTENDANCE (being present), ATTENTION (being attentive in class), PUNCTUALITY (being on time and completing readings on time), and PRIORITIZATION (realizing that APG is a major commitment and setting aside appropriate time in your schedule).  I believe that each student can be successful through hard work and dedication. He/she will get out of this course what he/she is willing to put into it.  Let’s work together to make this course a truly valuable and enjoyable intellectual experience.

Thank you in advance for all of your hard work and commitment.  Please read the attached course syllabus to become familiar with the content, policies, and procedures of this class (and save it in your binder for reference throughout the year).

Please read and review the syllabus; return your signed acknowledgment on Tuesday, 08/22/23

 Sincerely and Respectfully,
