The central goals of the course are:
To prepare students for future success in Spanish class.
Student success in an experience that is enriching linguistically, culturally, and educationally.
The course will focus on developing writing, reading, grammar, listening, and communicative skills (in context) through short readings, conversation, and other different sources.
Student Goals:
A large part of the student’s success depends on the student.
Must be committed to immerse in the language and work with dedication to meet the goals.
Come to every class prepared to learn with all needed materials.
Come in for personal consultation for needed help in Lab time.
Be open to learn about the language, culture, and the people.
Have mutual respect and a willingness to be a team player.
Strive to receive a passing grade.
NOTE: Spanish 1 students must earn at least a “C” to be recommended for Spanish 2.
Spanish 2 students must earn at least a “B” to be recommended for Spanish 3.
GRADING CRITERIA
Grades will be based on a set scale. The semester grade will be an average of the 3 grading periods.
A = 89.5 - 100 B = 79.5 – 89.4 C =69.5 – 79.4 D = 59.5- 69.4
CLASSROOM RULES
1. No talking while the teacher or others are talking. You should be a good listener.
2. Proper conduct and conducive to learning is required at all times.
3. The CUSD dress code will be strictly enforced.
4. Students will be TARDY if they are not in the room as the bell rings. The Tardy Policy & Consequences will be followed. Begin working on your 5 al día immediately.
5. DISMISSAL OF CLASS - The teacher, not the bell, will dismiss you at the end of the period.
6. No gum chewing allowed. No food or drinks allowed in class. (Except for bottled water or drinks having a lid/cap)
7. Unless under the direction of staff (for specific instructional or curricular purposes), students may not use electronic devices, including cell phones and/or earbuds, in classrooms. Devices should be turned off and stored according to the teacher’s directions. Devices may not be used in restrooms, locker rooms, or other spaces where students have an expectation of privacy.
8. Any student using an electronic device during class without teacher permission will have their electronic device sent to Student Services to be picked up at the end of the day. If using a cell phone or smart watch occurs during an exam, the student will receive a referral to student services and be subject to receiving a grade of zero for the exam.
CONSEQUENCES FOR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR OR BREAKING THE CLASSROOM RULES
NOTE: (The teacher reserves the right to assign any of the following consequences)
1. Teacher warning and conference with the student. Student will receive 0 for the day in Participation.
2. Student will be assigned lunch detention - Parents/Guardian will be contacted.
3. Student will be assigned after school detention - Parents/Guardian will be contacted.
4. Student will receive a conduct referral and sent to the Student Services Office.
EVALUATION METHODS / GRADE BREAK DOWN
10 % HOMEWORK
Daily homework (2-3 times per week) is due at the start of the period. No late homework will be accepted.
Any student attempting to copy from another student will receive No Credit for the work and the CNHS cheating discipline policy will be implemented.
15 % IN-CLASSWORK
Worksheets and in-class written assignments either as a group or individually will be frequently assigned.
Incomplete/unacceptable assignments will receive partial or no credit. No late assignments will be accepted.
15 % PARTICIPATION
Volunteering to share answers/sentences with the class/teacher. Sharing responses/sentences when called on.
Participating in games and activities. Completing in-class assignments.
CASS PARTICIPATION /
60 % UNIT EXAMS
Exams will be on grammar and vocabulary in any of the following formats: listening/reading comprehension, multiple choice, short written answers.
Exams will be given tentatively every two weeks during Block Day. Advance notice will be given to students.
Semester Final Exam comprehensive multiple choice exam covering grammar and vocabulary.
There are NOT exam Re-Takes.
EXAM INCENTIVE PLAN
Raise exam score to a maximum of 70%, for students who scored a ‘D’ or ‘F’ on an exam. (Excludes Final)
No limit on the number of exams that it can be applied to.
Student needs to attend labs with instructor within one week of exam score being recorded.
May be required more than one day of lab attendance.
Instructor will assist the student in recognizing errors and offer needed assistance.
Student must demonstrate knowledge/mastery of concept to teacher through an assessment.
If the assessment is satisfactory, per teacher’s judgment, student will receive the exam incentive points.
The assessment will only be given once.
EXTRA CREDIT
A maximum of only 1% will be allowed per semester (No exceptions).
Extra Credit: Unused Restroom Pass (.5%) Game stamps earned throughout the semester (.5%)
EXCUSED ABSENCES & MAKE UP POLICY
LATE homework or assignments will NOT be accepted unless the student is absent. Students have as many days to make them up as the days they were absent for full credit.
Missed exams are to be made up within a week of test date, after that, a score of 0 will be given as test grade.
Missing one day of instruction during a unit: students will need to take the test as scheduled.
MAKE UPS
Students are responsible for requesting any missed assignments/material and for making sure it gets turned in.
Students are responsible for arranging with the teacher when to come in for exam make ups.
Students can check the class website to find daily homework, assignments, handouts, and useful resources.
MATERIALS
Textbooks need to be brought to class when announced.
Students should keep all unit handouts to help them study for exams.
