COURSE SYLLABUS

& GUIDELINES

The central goals of the course are:

 

·       To prepare students for future success in Spanish class.

·       Student success in an experience that is enriching linguistically, culturally, and educationally. 

·       The course will focus on developing writing, reading, grammar, listening, and communicative skills (in context) through short readings, conversation, and other different sources.

 

Student Goals:

 

·       A large part of the student’s success depends on the student. 

·       Must be committed to immerse in the language and work with dedication to meet the goals.

·       Come to every class prepared to learn with all needed materials.

·   Come in for personal consultation for needed help in Lab time.

·   Be open to learn about the language, culture, and the people.

·       Have mutual respect and a willingness to be a team player.

·       Strive to receive a passing grade.

NOTE: Spanish 1 students must earn at least a “C” to be recommended for Spanish 2.

             Spanish 2 students must earn at least a “B” to be recommended for Spanish 3.

 

GRADING CRITERIA

 

Grades will be based on a set scale. The semester grade will be an average of the 3 grading periods.                        

A = 89.5 - 100              B = 79.5 – 89.4             C =69.5 – 79.4             D = 59.5- 69.4 

CLASSROOM RULES

 

1.   No talking while the teacher or others are talking.  You should be a good listener.

2.   Proper conduct and conducive to learning is required at all times.

3.   The CUSD dress code will be strictly enforced.

4.     Students will be TARDY if they are not in the room as the bell rings. The Tardy Policy & Consequences will be followed. Begin working on your 5 al día immediately.

5.     DISMISSAL OF CLASS - The teacher, not the bell, will dismiss you at the end of the period. 

6.     No gum chewing allowed. No food or drinks allowed in class. (Except for bottled water or drinks having a lid/cap)

7.     No electronic devices are to be used or taken out during class time. Any student using an electronic device during class time without teacher permission might be referred to Student Services.  If using a cell phone,” Smart” watch occurs during an exam, the student will receive a referral to student services and could be subject to receiving a grade of zero.

 

CONSEQUENCES FOR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR OR BREAKING THE CLASSROOM RULES

NOTE: (The teacher reserves the right to assign any of the following consequences)

1.     Teacher warning and conference with the student. Student will receive 0 for the day in Participation.

2.     Student will be assigned lunch detention - Parents/Guardian will be contacted.

3.     Student will be assigned after school detention - Parents/Guardian will be contacted.

4.     Conduct referral to the Student Responsibility Center.

 

 

EVALUATION METHODS / GRADE BREAK DOWN

 

A.    10 % - HOMEWORK

·       HOMEWORK -Daily homework due at the start of the period. No late homework will be accepted.

·       Any student attempting to copy from another student will receive No Credit for the work and the CNHS cheating discipline policy will be implemented.

 

B.    20 % CLASSWORK                   

·   CLASS WORK –frequent worksheets and in-class written assignments either as a group or individually.  

·   Incomplete/unacceptable assignments will receive partial or not credit. No late assignments will be accepted.

 

C.    20 % CLASS PARTICIPATION

EXCELLENT PARTICIPATION

Arrives on time, ready, and prepared with completed homework assignments, has necessary materials. Always participates and actively volunteers; uses time well; practices during games and activities, asks questions when doesn't understand; gives a response when called on; listens well; never interrupts the lesson; refrains from negative or inappropriate comments; respects others, their property and personal space; is cooperative and patient, never uses electronic devices without permission. 

UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR

Often arrives late to class; does not complete work or participates, does not practice during games or activities interrupts frequently; regularly complains or makes negative or inappropriate comments; often distracts other students; is argumentative or uncooperative; sometimes disrespectful to others; often uses electronic devices without permission

   Points will be deducted when students are off task, talking, disrupting the class, or not participating orally. -

CLASS PARTICIPATION /

D. 50 % TESTS

·       TESTS - On grammar and vocabulary in any of the following formats: listening/reading comprehension, conversation, oral & written, multiple choice, short answers, and in class timed writings.

They will be given tentatively every two weeks during Block Day. Advance notice will be given.

·       Semester Final Exam (multiple choice) covering grammar, vocabulary, and reading/listening comprehension.

·       There are NOT test Re-Takes. 

 

E.    TEST INCENTIVE PLAN

·        Raise test score to a maximum of 70%, for students who scored a “D” or “F” on an assessment (Excludes Final)

·       No limit on the number of tests that it can be applied to.

·       Student needs to attend labs with instructor within 1 week of test score being recorded.

·       May be required more than one day of lab attendance.

·       The instructor will assist student in recognizing errors and offer needed assistance.

·       Students must demonstrate knowledge/mastery of concept to teacher through an assessment.

·       If work is satisfactory, per teacher’s judgment, student will receive the incentive points.

·   The assessment will only be given once.

 

F.     EXTRA CREDIT:    A maximum of only 1% will be allowed per semester (No exceptions).

·         Extra Credit: Unused Restroom Pass (.5%) Stamps earned throughout the semester (.5%)

 

G. EXCUSED ABSENCES & MAKE UP POLICY

·   LATE homework or assignments will NOT be accepted unless the student is absent. Students have as many days to make them up as the days they were absent for full credit.

·       Missed Tests are to be made up within a week of test date, after that, a score of 0 will be given as test grade.

·       Missing one day of instruction during the unit: students will need to take the test as scheduled.

 


MAKE UPS

·   Students are responsible for requesting any missed assignments/material and for making sure it gets turned in.

·       Students are responsible for arranging with the teacher when to come in for make ups.

·       Students can check the class website to find daily homework, handouts, and useful resources.

 

H.    MATERIALS & SUPPLIES

·       Textbooks need to be brought to class ON BLOCKDAYS and on any other day when announced.

Detention will be assigned if books are not brought to class.

·       Students should keep all of their unit handouts to help them study for exams.

·       Kleenex donations for class. 

·       Recommended: notebook /line paper, one highlighter

·       RESOURCES- www.classzone.com is an interactive, educational, easy-to-use free online website available to all students taking the Spanish class. More Links to Spanish websites could be found on the class website.

 

The Foreign Language Dept. offers lunch and after-school tutoring or help for any student needing extra help.  I will provide help or tutoring during lunch for any student that would like me to personally help them.
