The Morgan School
8th Grade Trip to The Morgan School
Date: Wednesday, February 28, 2024
The Morgan school counselors will meet with the 8th grade students to discuss the high school transition process. This will include information regarding; the program of studies, graduation requirements, credit requirements, elective options and a review of the course selection process.
Students will bring home an elective sheet to support discussions with parents regarding elective and alternate course options for 9th grade, as well as the option of a study hall. (Handouts that will be given to students are also linked below)
Program of Studies
The program of studies provides course descriptions for each class offered at Morgan, detailed information about course levels, graduation requirements, credits, and more.
Course Level Options for 9th Grade
HONORS LEVEL: The most demanding academic program available. Admission requirements for HONORS courses are an average of B+ or better in the preceding course AND the recommendation of the present teacher in that discipline.
LEVEL 1: courses which, if passed with AT LEAST a C average, will prepare the student for admission into 4-year colleges and universities. A strong academic program with college-oriented materials is used throughout. There is extensive reading and writing in all courses.
8th Grade Course Information Night @ The Morgan School
Date: Wednesday, February 28, 2024 @ 6:00pm
The Morgan School cordially invites all 8th grade parents and students to come and hear from The Morgan staff about each of their academic departments and course offerings for 9th graders.
The Morgan program chairs and current Morgan students will share information and answer any questions about course offerings at Morgan.
The Course Selection Process
Date: Tuesday, March 5, 2024
This is the time your child will select their courses for 9th grade. The school counselors from Morgan and Eliot will be in the classroom to help with selections and questions.
Students will only be able to select the core courses they are recommended for. However, some students may have two levels recommended (Honors and Level 1). This is to allow the option of choosing so students can have balance in their schedule.
Students will be able to choose any available 9th grade elective classes to fill the remaining periods in their schedule. (Morgan strongly recommends students include a study hall. Students can have a fully year study hall each year of high school and still fulfill all graduation requirements.)
Students will not be able to change courses outside of what they select for courses and alternates, so please encourage your child to pick carefully and select electives they are most interested in.
The course selection portal in PowerSchool stays open for a few days, so parents can view the classes their child was recommended for and ultimately selected. If you are in disagreement with any levels of core classes, you can contact the 8th grade teacher directly. (There is an override process, if needed. Override Form)
If there is an elective class that needs to be changed, or if your child was recommended for two levels and you want to switch what they chose, you can do this directly in PowerSchool. *Must login on a computer, this will not work on a mobile app.
TO ACCESS COURSE SELECTION IN POWERSCHOOL:
Log into PowerSchool on a computer or laptop
In the left navigation bar, click on Course Registration
The courses listed in the squares have already been selected.
To see if there were additional options/levels offered, click on the pencil icon.
If you make any changes to your child's course selection, you MUST click submit to save your changes.
There is a possibility students will come home with a printout of their course selection for a parent signature, but we have had difficulty with printing in past years.
If there is any concern about core class placement/level, please contact your child's teacher.
If you have any other questions about course selection, please reach out to Mrs. Fusaro at Eliot.
