May 2022

Where has the school year gone? It is hard to believe that we are in our final month of school!

We will be busy with spring activities of gardening and planting. In our classroom, we have planted seeds and have placed them on our windowsill. Every day we check to see if they have grown and if they need water. We are learning all about how plants grow and thrive.

We have had a butterfly garden display in our classroom. The children are watching the progression of caterpillars to their cocoons to the emergence of beautiful butterflies. We will go outside to set our butterflies free. The book The Hungry, Hungry, Caterpillar and other books by Eric Carle will be read throughout the month, such as The Grouchy Ladybug and the Very Busy Spider.

In addition to butterflies, we will also touch on insects that come around in spring. We will read The Ugly Bug by Liz Pinchon to learn how insects are beneficial to plants and animals in the spring.

In religion, we will be talking about Mary the Blessed Mother. May is the month of Mary, and as such, we will discuss the importance of the mother of Jesus. We will introduce the rosary to the class. We will be giving each child their very own rosary. This may be a great opportunity to pray the rosary with your child the night that you see it in their schoolbags.

We will be enjoying Nursery Rhymes this month. It is amazing how still children will sit while listening to Nursery Rhymes. We will investigate how Humpty Dumpty cracked and why. Also, I will bring in different size candlesticks for the children to jump over like Jack Be Nimble did.

Also this month, we will be exploring farm animals. Along with singing “Old McDonald Had a Farm” we will be learning about all of the animals that live on a farm and what they produce for the farmer.

On Thursday, May 29th, we will have our Mother’s Tea at 10:15am in our classroom. We ask that you leave siblings at home, for this is a special time that we have planned for mother and child.

We will conclude our year with a family picnic (weather permitting) at Merwood Park on Wednesday, June 8th. The children will come to school at the usual time and we will walk to the park at 10:00am to meet those who are able to join us. Please pack a picnic blanket and a picnic snack for your child. All children will be dismissed from Merwood Park. If you cannot make the picnic, please make arrangements to pick up your child from the park by 11:15am.

For those children, whose birthdays fall in the summer, feel free to pick a day to celebrate their birthday in class.

God bless you and thank you for a most wonderful year! Jackie Ryan and Cathy Clinton
