Shelter Assistant

SHIFT ASSISTANT is a part-time hourly position who reports to the shelter manager (hourly pay based on experience). Shift Assistant helps to monitor the 20-bed cold weather shelter during open hours, 5:30pm-12:00am and 12:00am-8:00am November 1 – April 30, and during inclement weather periods as determined by the Director of Operations. They are on the front line of shelter operations: interacting with residents, volunteers, churches, and special visitors.

Primary Responsibilities

      • Prepare shelter for opening and closing before and after residents leave the facility.

      • Follow and enforce all rules established for the operation of the shelter.

      • Monitor and ensure the safety of all residents.

      • Document all entries and dismissals

      • Assist in maintaining a journal of the activities and events in the shelter that will also be kept locked and available for review by the Shelter Manager, Director of Operations, and the Board of Directors.

      • Ensure that all chores are completed in a timely fashion, assist residents to do laundry and conduct inventory.

      • Keep client records confidential, whether written or verbal.

      • Report any incidents of fighting or abusive behavior to the Shelter Manager immediately.

      • Maintain good and encouraging relationships with all residents.

      • Report to the Shelter Manager any verbal or written updates on clients’ progress in finding housing, employment, or other benchmark areas.

About our Cold Weather Shelter

Streets of Hope operates the only cold weather shelter for men in Southeast Baltimore County (Essex, Dundalk, Middle River, etc.) as a part of the Baltimore County Continuum of Care. We operate every November through April with the help of paid staff and more than 200 volunteers. Our shelter is open nightly from 6:00pm to 8am. Partner churches provide a hot meal each night and fellowship with the men.

  • Experience working with homeless or at-risk population

  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and in an emergency, especially with residents with physical, intellectual, and/or mental disabilities.

Ability to work evening and overnight shifts.


Hours / Compensation

Must be able to work Flexible hours at $14.00 (Shift Assistant). Must be able to work between the hours of 5:30pm-12:00am and 12:00am-8:00am.

NON-PROFIT COMMUNICATION INTERN

Job description

This is an amazing position that will allow the qualified candidate to expand his/her knowledge of the non-profit sector while creating and developing digital content. The intern will support the coordination of specific marketing and communication activities under the direction of the Business Liaison and Marketing Coordinator. Duties will be tailored to intern's interest/area of study, but typical duties of the marketing and communications intern include, but are not limited to:

• Managing and creating social media content for the purpose of disseminating communication, educating, and engaging the community.

• Research and develop new ideas for website and social media.

• Expand social media platforms.

• Ongoing assistance and maintenance of the organization’s website.

• Attend monthly board/subcommittee meetings.

• Update media contact lists.

• Assist with the branding and consistent messaging based on the organizations mission. • Help solicit in-kind donations.

Requirements & Experience

• Ability to work well with others or independently

• Initiative to problem solve, if necessary

• Responsible to complete projects by a pre-determined deadline

• Ability to be flexible and work on multiple projects simultaneously

• Ability to communicate effectively and accurately in oral and written language • Proficient in usage of G Suite, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software; other software (photo, video, etc.) a plus

• Accurate and detail oriented.

• Strong awareness of various social media platforms and analytics

Undergraduate student studying Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, Graphic design or equivalent. Candidates will be enthusiastic with a strong work ethic and positive attitude. This an Equal Opportunity Position.
