English 12

Welcome to English 12! This year we will focus on how a person acts in the face of adversity shapes his or her identity. Together we will strengthen your ability to think critically, analytically, and creatively. In this course students will read, write, listen, and speak for understanding, literary response, critical analysis, and for social interaction. This outline will give you an introduction to some of the expectations and rules that will allow us to create an engaging, challenging, comfortable, and fun learning environment.

1. 3- ring binder with paper or a notebook that is used only for English notes

2. a pocket folder

  11. Students will also work on a literary analysis paper and presentation this year based on a work of world literature of their choice

Assessments:

  1. Homework, Classwork and Class Participation: 10%

  2. Quizzes: 20%

  3. Tests: 30%

  4. Writing assignments: 40%

You may submit writing assignments early, but any writing assignments that are handed in late will lose 5% per day. All writing assignments must be submitted through turnitin.com. All papers will be graded on turnitin.com and it is your responsibility to check the comments online.

  1. Cultural Close-Up Reading Project: 50% of your 4th quarter grade only.

You will have the opportunity to select a contemporary work of literature. This is also a chance for you to work independently in preparation for college reading. In addition to the writing components of this project, you will also put together a formal presentation to the class. This will help you to practice and prepare for your final CHOOSE presentation at the end of the year.

Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is strictly prohibited and will result in a grade of zero! According to your school handbook, participation in plagiarism includes:

· Copying any written work, whether in entirety or partially. This includes homework, classwork, labs, or essays, from any source, including a friend.

· Paraphrasing work, whether in entirety or partially, without giving credit to the source.

· Sharing work with another student, unless given explicit permission from the teacher.

BOTH PARTIES, THE STUDENT WHO COPIED AND THE STUDENT WHO SUPPLIED THE WORK, ARE CONSIDERED EQUALLY GUILTY IN PLAGIARISM.

Class rules:

  1. Put away all electronic devices such as music players and phones, before entering the classroom.

  2. Please refrain from eating and drinking in the classroom.

  3. Come and see me at the end of class if you came in to class late.

  4. Listen while the teacher or another classmate is speaking and raise your hand to participate in class discussion. Be respectful of everyone.

  5. Take care of school property. Don’t write on desks or touch the belongings of your classmates.

If the above rules and expectations are not met you may receive a warning, detention with me after school, or referral will be sent to the office and a phone call will be made home.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you have about homework or the work we are doing in class. It is also a good idea to get in the habit of checking all of your assignments on the class website. All grades will be posted on the portal as they are available.
