Spanish is the official language in 21 countries. It is the world's third most widely spoken language, after Mandarin Chinese and Hindi. English comes in fifth place, according to data from 2021.
The language originated in Spain, and from there it spread to the Spanish colonies in South America and North America. The following countries have Spanish as their official language: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea (Africa), Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
